Basic CG/Video compositing
Posted: Sat Nov 04, 2006 8:36 amSo here's another one I did, this one showing a really basic composite of a CG element in After Effects. I think it will mostly benefit people who haven't had much experience compositing CG things into video plates.
I shot some simple video of my apartment complex (from a tripod), and then show you how to remove one of the lights on the wall with a simple still-frame patch, and then composite in a still-frame of a CG light fixture. If you've used AE for compositing before, this won't be anything new for you.
I also quickly demonstrate the field-blending technique I use to double the quality of DV footage. I also plainly demonstrate its one major drawback.
Again, it's a EXE file only because it zips with its own self-extracter - it will install NOTHING on your computer. This one is 234 Megs, I think its around 46 minutes long.

I didn't post the footage I shot for two reasons:
1 - It would just be one more huge file for you to download, and
2 - I strongly encourage you to try it on footage you shoot yourself (or get by other means). That way, you're kinda forced to learn what it is your doing, not just copy every single mouse click.
If there's a huge outcry for me to post the footage, I will.
I'd like to do some much more advanced AE compositing tutorials as well. Some much trickier things, like how to remove things that have perspective change using the still-frame technique, or maybe some replacments (like a label replacement or a TV burn-in). Would that stuff be useful to anyone?
