FX Challenge: TWISTER (April 02 - April 24)

Postby Cameron on Sun Apr 02, 2006 11:19 am

OK, Time for the next challenge.

I thought I'd break up the sphere routine for a wee bit and introduce a different kind of Animation challenge. This one is more sided towards Visual Effects than Character Animation. The topic is...

TWISTERS / TORNADOES / WATERSPOUTS

I'm sure you all know what these are, but... incase you're a bit out of the loop here's a little description:

TORNADO/TWISTER:
The word "tornado" comes from the Latin tonare, meaning "to thunder." The Spanish developed the word into tornear, to turn or twist. These are good descriptions of tornadoes, which are formed by rotating or twisting air. This is why they are also called twisters or cyclones.

A tornado is a powerful column of winds spiraling around a center of low atmospheric pressure. It looks like a large black funnel hanging down from a storm cloud. The narrow end will move over the earth, whipping back and forth like a tail.

WATERSPOUT:
A waterspout occurs when a tornado forms over oceans, lakes, or rivers. They form when high layers of cool air blow across a body of water while warm moist air sweeps up from below. They appear as thin columns with the funnels sucking up water over mushroom-shaped water sprays.

...

Waterspouts, like their land counterparts, can pick up and transport some interesting objects. In Montreal, a waterspout once carried lizards and rained them on the hapless Canadians. They have sent showers of tadpoles in New York, and even toads in France. One in Providence, Rhode Island, rained fish down on the people, who promptly collected and sold them.

This challenge isn't going to be very restrictive. You've got 3 weeks max to create an animation that includes at least 1 simulation of a Tornado/Twister or Waterspout. It can be anything, from a hapless cow that gets transported accross the country, a twister from birth to dissipation, a waterspout sucking a whale out of the ocean and dropping it on a chicken in mating season. It's up to you, just as long as you include at least one Tornado/Twister or Waterspout.

The entries to this challenge don't have to be realistic. You could create a storm system spouting a tornado into the palm of your hand. It could be a lego tornado, or a clay one.

Low gray clouds loom in the distance. Suddenly, a tail descends from one of them, and twists itself into a spinning, funnel-shaped system - a tornado. It whips back and forth as it moves across the earth, churning away houses, trees, and other objects with the tremendous force of its spinning winds.

Challenge Guidelines:
[list]
-There must be at least one simulation of either a Twister/Tornado or Waterspout
-You must post a link to your animation and a render into this thread when it is ready to be voted upon
-Your entry can be 3D OR 2D (Both dimensions will be accepted)
-Your entry can be no longer than 600 frames
-Deadline is April 22, that gives you 2 weeks, plus an extra week of extension
-Compositing is allowed (As in, you can use stock footage, or footage you have taken, and composite in the simulation)
-The use of plugins, simulation or any other type of software IS allowed. Heck, if you have the means go out on a field trip and video a real Tornado and enter that then thats fine too!
[/list:u]

The main aim of this challenge is to have fun!!

It is a WIP challenge too, so post your threads in the following format:

TWISTER: Your Name
eg:
Twister: Cameron James

Good luck all!!!!

WoooHooo!!! This sounds awsome Cam!!! I'm definatly in!
One question - can i film the background plate in Live Action, and then add the Tornado in the shot?
Im really looking forward trying this out - never had the time to play around with Dynamics much before.

lol - the last guideline is very funny.

You've got until monday midnight to get your entries posted. Thats only like 2 days extra, but might just be enough to let a few of you get your entries finished... so... Good luck, and I'll see you at the finish line!
