20 Jun 2006Plastic is a lot like metal, but its softer and comes in more vibrant colours.
It needs nice reflection, but depending on the density it can also have refraction and/or sss.
On that note, plastic itself can be rough or smooth, transparent or solid, shiny or dull etc depending on the type of plastic. Therefore its not too hard to simulate if you know what plastic you're after.

20 Jun 2006Well thats it, plastic comes in many different forms. It just depends what you're after.
Some plastics look identical to glass, some look identical to metal, others look identical to skin, others look identical to wood, others look the same as water, others look like foxes on heat. Plastic can be anything.
I personaly think they look like metal.
I dont even know why i attached it, dont ask me.

20 Jun 2006Yea there are some plastics that definitely look like that....
However, traditionally it's ceramic that looks like that, and regular plastic is more translucent as Mike suggested.

Similar to road cones I guess.
What you want to do is give your material either a light specular (so the highlights aren't too tight) or glossy reflections, combined with either some fake translucency (standard max material) or some SSS (mental ray material or Vray material etc) -
