I can't say I'm a fan of that video.
the beginning should be fairly simple to recreate in max.
I'd start off with pflow,
Using a vortex spacewarp force I'd have the particles spin around and up.
Then I'd apply some nice blobmesh to it then i'd try out something new like meshering it if I have to, then using a relax modifier or some funky tool to blend the areas where the blob looks distorted because of the unwater like capacity of metaparticles.
to get it to then form into the ball shapes, and spin around again, you could split the particles in two either by using deflectors, or the split operator, then use a reversed speed by object operator to bring the particles from either side to their relative sphere shaped companions, then use another vortex (or two) to spin them at different intervals and then bob's your mary.
(There is like a 40% chance that could work)
