hello all...My name is Doug, I am a max user with ntermediate abilities and I have a problem... A block. I have this kinda sorta showcase with this guy who may be willing to give me a job as an entry level vfx artist, at this company, but I have no clue what to work on to show them, I have a reel thats meeh, and I just want to add one or 2 things that are spectacular, and here is the problem, I dont want to do cars, rooms, (i may want to do a building but have no blueprints) so could someone give me a project (a good one) that can showcase modeling animation lighting and rendering? keep in mind i am intermediate and will probably be posting lots og questions. (by the way i have never done character animation, I modeled 1 character but the rigging is all screwy) i think i downloaded one of those final fantasy (the american one) like characters so i may have one to work with... help me out folks...

if it's a visual effects company, i'd say go out and shoot some video of something, then ADD something CG into the shot. if the potential employer can't tell what you added, you'll probably get the job. of course, you'll have to show the before shot, and maybe some progress, to prove you did it, but i think that would be pretty cool, since it's what you'd be doing at work anyway. for example, shoot a busy street corner, then stick a CG mailbox and lightpost in. make it a handheld shot, so it's all wobbly.
or, if there may be compositing work at the job, do the same thing, but instead of adding something, REMOVE something. shoot that busy sidewalk, then remove 2 or 3 of the people walking around. there's alot of that kind of thing in visual effects. or pick one person out of the group, and make their shirt a different color.
or maybe try turning a sunny day shot into a rainy day shot, or a nighttime shot.
just my thoughts. i've never been in a position to hire anyone before, but i would find this kind of stuff very impressive if the person never did professional visual effects before.
