i'm looking for a good tutorial on how to create controllers in the viewport for my facial rig, so i might control all the morph targets from the viewport, anyone have any suggestions?

It's mainly about wiring mate, there's a pretty crappy tutorial here on the forums about wiring. The thing is you can wire parameters of anything, to the parameters of anything.
Like, the value of a certain morph to the target distance of the camera. Things like that, fun stuff.
Generally with facial rigs, as far as I know, you wire up the values to the position or rotation values of certain controlling objects like dummies, splines or what not.

hey thanks cam!
i've used your titorial along with two others to piece together the process of creating controllers. since it seems so hard to come by when i'm finished with this project, or perhaps along the way i'll write up a tutorial on this specifically.
i have another issue that i was hoping you (or anyone for that matter) might be able to help me with.
now that i have the little outline box, and the joystick within it, how to i constrain the joysticks movements to remain within the outline box?
