a 2d animation using 3dstudio max, using cut outs and bringing them into the 3d program, i've seen it once before and it really gives the animation a floaty surreal effect, but just wondering how i would go about it because i'm pretty new to 3d studio max

well it all depends on the look u want if u want to render a 3d model with a 2d look u need to use max's pen & ink shader . but if u actually want to bring a character uve animated in 2d into a 3d environtment i guess you woulkd have to use deformed planes. (btw are u by any cahnce talking about waking life?)

the film was a short i seen a couple of years back think it was called blake and hunt......the story was based on gravediggers
i think what im trying to do is bring everything 2d into a 3d environment without actually changing it, so i kind of looks like a paper puppet show but with the capability of a 3d world, tough to explain because im just trying to figure it out in my head from memory of what the film was like.

You can import vector art into 3dsmax as spline objects.
Am not sure about importing an animation.
You can use planes with alpha maps, not a bad idea, and would work well with animation.
