3D Studio Max
Help for a newbie who is mostly new to Max but not Maya

Jonathan 480 posts09 Oct 2005I'm certainly not a guru of Maya, as I only owned the Learning Edition. But I did do some video training with key frame animation, rigging some stuff up, joints, etc.
The only thing I've done so far in Max really is model a house or two.
So anyway, I was wondering a few things,
(1) the help files that come with Max, are there updated ones now and then and where do you download these?
(2) what is the best route to learning Max? I have the 3D Max Bible but was seeking some first-hand end-user testimonies and advice as well

I'd say your best bet would be to work through all of the tutorials that you can get there first. -

Also, how about these lines? They weren't there the last time I saw Max and they aren't on the video tutorial I'm using. Is this something with Service Pack 1 or can I turn it off, and if so, should I? I'm talking about the diagonal lines crossing the faces of the cube, cylinder, etc. Thanks!

09 Oct 2005As far as I know...to change that is in the viewport configuration (and in your graphics card configuration)
You have to turn off "triangle faces" -

olli96 30 posts09 Oct 2005the 3dsmax bible is just a copy of the manual in my opinion, dont waste your time with this book. do the tutorials that came with max, they are quite good. if you want to spend some money for a max book, get pete drapers book - deconstructing the elements ( http://www.xenomorphic.co.uk/gallery_dte.htm ). its the only max book out there which is worth the money. most max books are a waste of money, belive me, i bought quite a lot 3dsmax books. So, my advice is to start with the 50+ tutorials that came with max and then have a look at the free available max tutorials all over the internet. you can find lots of great links in this thread: http://www.simplycg.net/viewtopic.php?t=7
