well, think of it this way, the faster you zoom, the more you can hide with motion blur, and clouds are a nice way to mask out the transition between geometry. Make different levels of geometry, and try to break up things as much as possible, without making it so you have to render it in 50 passes.
And if you have footage to end up on, you will most likely want to start with that and work the zoom backwards, that way you can start on what is solid, and build out from that. What I would do, is if the camera is still, you can just slap it in there, but if it moves, that is nice, because then you can track it, slide it forward in space and ramp out of your keys from the track, making the motion of the transition a bit more seamless.
