hmmm... can you convert it to geometry?

If it's anything like shag hair (which i'm led to believe it is) there should be a certain shadow type that can cast hair shadows. You know how you have raytrace, shadow map, area shadows, mental ray shadow map, e.t.c.... well there should be a hair shadow type in there as well. If not, you can try the geometry approach.

When I just use a simple setup (standard fur on a sphere) the fur casts shadows when I use a spot with raytraced shadows...

To get the light to cast shadows of the hair do this:
First you have to have hair and a light (works only on spotlights i think).
then you add the hair and fur modifire on the light..
then you go into the enviroment settings, and choose the effect rollout.
select the hair effect (wichshould be there) and then go down to the light rollout.
then select the light in the viewport and select add (or somthing) in the rollout..
I think thats how you do it...
and BTW.. i think it only works on spotlights.. wich is a bit *#?"#" because it would be MUCH betterif it worked with all kind of lights...
