i know this is an older thread, but thought i'd throw this out there. i too have been very interested in explosions, especially realistic ones. i don't have afterburn, which looks sweet! maybe now that autodesk owns maya, they'll configure us up something like maya fluids!

it's pretty cool, but when i was doing it a while back, something about it made me think it wasn't for animation, it was only for stills. (can't remember what made me think that, but it's in there somewhere...)
so i tweaked it a bit for animation, and also had to change how the particles fade out, cuz what he demonstrates looks kinda bad.
but i ended up getting a really cool little animation test out of it, and with a little sound fx, really made a BANG! (bad pun, i know... i'm a bad person

)
the coolest thing about this tutorial was linking omni lights to the flying debris, and how it illuminates the particles.
