Interesting...
I still use 8, and noticed in Tyson's newest tutorial that he's still using 8 as well. honestly, the only thing I've seen that has made me want to get a newer version has been the Mental Ray improvements/simplifications.

yeah mental ray has really come a long way but thats really all in school we have always the newest versions of software (i think they have too much money

but they get these edu packs for much less).
i have 2008 aswell but i really really dont think to get 09
i diddnt saw any improvements that i would somehow make use of and i finally just got my fr (final render)(i love it ) so dont wanna update that aswell maybe again with max 2010 or 11?

gonna go ahead and say that 2009 is a big joke

i dotn know how it is in max8 but in max2008 its suepr easy to setup a sky/sun lighting scheme in mental ray. something like 4-5 clicks before rendering haha

MILKING THE FRANCHISE i assumed they will make a major leap before another version but seems like they are concerned about selling.

It is true about sky/sun light in max 2008 - they are upgraded.
But as for max 2009 I think that his appearance is really because of some process in industry. I have read somewhere on net, can't remember now where exactly, that AutoDesk just wanted align many of it's software releases to some certain approximate month and date but max 2008 didn't align in this time. Maybe so date is of importance? Who knows all these media industries behind the scenes? Me not certainly

Trying the demo now.
The floating cube is cool (tells you where you are in 3d spce).

Oh no, that is a pretty ugly cube haha. I was expecting something small.
I'm going to get the demo now. I will not be upgrading for a while, my school is still on 9

LOL That axis cube is from Maya.
I read that they would not for the time being be combining Maya and Max but instead would start adding similar features to both in all new versions. It is pretty silly to have 2009 already though, sheesh.
-
diemacht 1,045 posts
haha yeah its really a maya feature its darn usefull but looks really awful and too big but im sure you can adjust its size
-
JayG 1,164 posts
Yep, or just turn it off. You really hardly ever need it anyway.
-

yeah like I said theres nothing in 09 that really effects anything I do. I'm not upgrading for the maya cube (that I turn off in maya anyhow).

Yeah.. there arent any huge features or anything in max 2009..
but what i like is that:
They have gotten Hair and fur up to date with the newest verison and alot of updates on that area..
the viewport cube is fine.. as long as you turn the size down.. and only make it visible in the active view
... + some improvements on speed and such...
but damn MAX... all plugins have to be recompiled.. so im still waiting for my beloved FinalRender to be recompiled for Max 2009..

i think you really did eat your words

and the region render thing is there for about 20000 years.
but they mentioned it for the first time which i dont get.
i saw the "new features" videos for the render stuff and i have to say its a joke
most of the stuff they talk about its already in max and was in the previous releases they just give it a new paint and sell it as if it is some revolutionary thing.
shame on you autodesk

no way really...........dam Iam a turd...... now playing with this program for a while if Thats always been there then I spit me word back out cuz I thought that was it. well looks like I still mite go back to 8......
-
BColbourn 2,323 posts
yeah it seems theyre using that cube to normalize the different programs(max and maya)
speaking of 2009, there's supposed to be a way for 3ds max 2009 to read maya files, anyone know how?
-
kilroy 787 posts
wow that would be cool , I have not herd of that!!!
-
diemacht 1,045 posts
i think it would be much much much more cooler if they could add a seamles workflow between mudbox and max/maya. i used the demo a couple of times i liked it much more than zbrush its so easy and clean
-
kilroy 787 posts
haha thats funny I been playing around with mud myself. Still in the early learning stage.
