What do you do when its full i tried to use a Multi/Sub object to combine them but it will only show the first one.(mapping channel blah but i couldnt manage to swich objects to show the second map channel dunno why)
You can just select one of the materials, drag it into a neighboring slot, and rename it. That creates a new one ...then you can reset it or change it or whatever.

another way might be to use the utilities drop down in the mateial editor and klick "reset material editor slots"... its there since max 8 i think...keeps all mats in the scene, but makes the editor fresh and clean
