In 3dsMax, is it possible to have two materials blend together based on vertex color, something you can do for terrain, for example, so you have a tiled materials being blended together to reduce the tiling effect?
Not sure about how 3dsmax does weight maps but in XSI and maya you can have the object be a base color, and plug a painted weight map into the alpha of the material you want on top. i'm sure someone will come along and explain how max specifically does it

Max has a vertex color map. You can use a mix map in your map slot (diffuse, opacity, etc.), load your 2 textures in slots 1 and 2 of the mix, then use the vertex color map as your mix amount. Vertices that are white will display map 1, vertices that are black will display map2.
