just downloaded a load of background objects i needed for a quick short I'm doing but they are .3ds files which dont open in 3d studio max, is there a converter out there?or even a decent 3d website to download .max files cause I'm a bit behind in time on this short nd need to cut corners for more animation.

Use File->Import... instead of File->Open.../File->Merge...
