Well I've spent a few late nights over the past few weeks tearing my hair out over weekly scripting challenges running over at cgtalk.
Besides the ones that many of you have already seen of mine (the table-maker, the object-breaker etc), here are a couple more! I've tested them pretty extensively, and have had other people help me work out the bugs...so hopefully they'll work for ya! (and they're pretty self explanatory)
(Make 2 splines and a "zipper" object...and have this script zip the splines up!)
(Create 2 end objects, and have this script make an animated lighting/electritiy bolt between them

13 Jul 2005I commented on the code in the "zipper" script (commented, as in...wrote explanatory remarks beside most lines of code)....maybe if you browsed through it, it would help you to understand a little how maxscript works?

The zapper is fantastic mate. I made it go with one with heaps of detail and lots of frequencey, and another with lots less detail and lower frequency.

The Zipper I couldn't get to work. Kept saying couldn't use get function, or put function.

13 Jul 2005Haha...well the zipper (I've found) has been pretty hit-and-miss. As I was bug-testing with some people over at cgtalk we had some problems that we just couldn't figure out. Eventually the problem went away on the one guy's computer (for some reason which we don't know)....but I've never had any errors on my computer with it so that makes it kind of hard to debug
Anyways...here's an avi showing what it's supposed to do hehe

The reason it might not have worked for me, is that I used the two splines I created with your zzzaaaaaap zzap script. -
13 Jul 2005Haha...yes...that would be the problem.
All splines created with my zapper script are in a different subclass than any spline you could create through the create panel. It's a weird little quirk with max...but it basically means that all you have to do is create the zipper splines manually and it'll work (ie...for some reason it won't work with some splines created with a script).
Try again with 2 splines drawn by you and it should work -

Yay these look cool! I'll have a pop later today. I've been inspired to do some electrical exploding yayness because we're having one mean mean storm here at the moment!
So much more interesting than the storms back home! -

14 Jul 2005Hey Global...my zipper script is limited in the sense that all it does is zip ALL of the vertices over the selected period of time....so....if your zipper object only moves one inch and you've got 200 feet of zipper tread, then yes, all that tread will condense down to fit into the zipper object's path.
The same is true for the opposite. 2 inches of zipper tread can streeeetch to fit the zipper path over the selected period of time.
Overall, you've just gotta estimate the distances yourself to make it look right
Post some of your Mel code! I'd love to see what the differences in syntax are!
