10 Apr 2006Well it was pretty simple....as opposed to using gravity to do the initial movement (like in my tutorial), I just set some motion keyframes and moved the car manually in the direction I wanted it to go and let reactor handle the actual impact.
Reactor is cool that way, because as long as you start your simulation after your object begins to move along the trajectory you've set (by setting regular keyframes), reactor will take that motion into consideration in its calculations. -
10 Apr 2006tyson, do you conect your mesh to a box in reactor,complete your simulation. Then link the mesh to the box, then hide? then do the colth, or do you use the car mesh in the simulation?

10 Apr 2006For the cloth dynamics, you have to use the car mesh. For rigid dynamics you can use a hidden proxy

11 Apr 2006oh jeez... this is like friggin confession (and i'm not even catholic!)
i did the car crash tutorial too, when i found it. i made a little spaceship looking car and slammed him into a big steel sphere. it rocked!
so thanks, tyson!
on a side note, i also did a slug like tyson's. (based on a tutorial he emailed be, completed with diagrams made using keyboard characters!)
well, not like tyson's actually. his looks real. mine looks like a poorly painted slug that can't seem to move more than one joint at a time.
so thanks for that too!
should we all use this thread to post our Tyson Car Crash examples?

12 Apr 2006for a better slug, go to tyson's site. he emailed me a little informal tutorial on how to rig it. i have it saved and can post it, but maybe he can do it better. if he doesn't have time to post it, i will gladly (can i, tyson? or would you rather do it formally?)
as for the smoke, sitting here at work i can't actually remember what i was doing entirely in that explosion movie, but i remember the main trick was having them continue to scale up, then fade them out. and i learned (from pete draper) that the best looking smoke is to make a soft material that is so transparent you can't see it in the material editor, and use TONS of facing particles that overlap. but i think i used not-so-transparent smoke materials here, cause i was just kind of goofing around and wanted it done quick. -
