Selling models

21 Jun 2005Hey folks.
Lately I have not been 3D'ing that much in my free time (no inspiration), but I do have the idea of selling some of my models. Yet up until now I haven't dared doing it for a number of reasons.
One being that I personally always thought that it's model whoring and selling your 3D soul to the devil. Secondly I would doubt I would sell any.
Yet, at the moment, I think that some of my models are good enough to sell (my Porsche and Alfa Romeo SZ), and am thinking about actually doing it. Since after all: it basically is free money, right?
Have any of you guys ever sold models?
And if so: through which website(s)?
And what's your stance regarding selling models?
Any input or fresh view would be much appreciated! -

I tried to sell some simple models for cheap over at the3dstudio (mainly testing out the "new and improved" selling system Matt installed) but to no avail (hehe...go figure). Several people added my model(s) to their cart...but none of them actually purchased.
I think the problem with trying to sell models online is that it's not too hard to:
a) make your own
b) find a free version of the same thing
Unless you're literally a company that spits out THOUSANDS of models for sale, the chances of you selling your models if you only have one or two is also slimmer.
But then again, someone with the good reputation you have (ie...you're the internet standard for blueprints) might have a better chance.
Anywho...I'm just thinking out loud. What do I know ?

22 Jun 2005I have much the same views that is, the model you're trying to sell is most likely available for free elsewhere.
There are a couple of other places I've seen that sell models.

http://turbosquid.com is another i'm sure you've heard of.
There was that other one that was advertised on cgtalk that was specifically for cars that seemed to do alright.
I haven't sold any myself, but I don't see anything wrong with selling them. If a company requires them at really short notice then I see no better way than using someone elses.
You should have no problems selling your models mate. People at most of these places are selling crap arsed models, and getting paid nicely for them.
I remember when I was working at the crystal company, we went looking for models... All the ones that we found were too crap, low poly, or just even more crap. So I had to make them myself. Which cost the company more to pay me then it would to buy the models. So in that respect, the more the high quality models that are available, the better it would be. -
22 Jun 2005Yeah I go with what's been said here. I gotta say that selling your models is far from selling out (or selling your soul) and if you can get money from some of the hard work you put in, why not?
Certainly from what I've seen your models are more than sellable, they are saught after! Your name pops up at many places around the net and as Tyson says reputation is important.
One thing though is the whole copyright issue. I'm not a car modeller myself, but I do recall hearing a number of rumours flying around re. the manufacturers copyright of your model. Not sure what the outcome of the discussion was, but you may want to look into it. -

Like Cam said lots of companies buy models for short notice contracts, we do it sometimes at work, it can be a time saving especially when the deadline is short.
