Sad to hear that The3DS is doing bad, havent been there in quite a while.

It's sad to see how it got there, the admin being reluctant about letting mods in, key people leaving, some very anoying customers and constantly promising updates and the only thing we got was a shopping cart!. It kinda just sold out and i know its hard to run a site if it gets big, but thats why we should have some kinda democracy in there, i really do believe if Matt would have made the right decisions and let a few of us in, we would not have gotten to this point.

That said i think my time there has ended, i'm really proud of what cam and tyson have put together here and i know this site is going to be a major one in the cg segment! and i know you guys are not gonna sell out cuz you love cg, something i wanst so sure of about Matt.

so yeah movin' on!

P.S. Cam, i just read your rant on T3ds, man you really kicked this guy in the nuts unfortunately, i could not have agreed with u more

i guess we have to thank cam and tyson for this great idea of setting a forum with the same community and the members that have gone away of t3ds thanx

I have to agree with what has been said many times, the 3DStudio was a nice place for me to hang out while I was learning 3D. The 'family' feeling there was great at the time. C&Cs were helpful and not too harsh. ( Just what a noob needs.)
There was humor without it being too childish or hurtful, and everyone there really seemed to enjoy themselves.

Then it took a turn for the worse. Things started getting out of hand, and I only stopped in to read a few posts. ( Yes I was busy with work, family and life in general, but I still found time to drop by. )

When the forum became a kindergarten I really stopped going there. I would only drop in to post something I did just to let everyone know I was still around and still creating something. ( Whatever it was at the time )

I've been reading the thread over at the 3DStudio, and there was one where Matt was basically saying.. well, you know what.. let me go and get it so I don't paraphrase... hang on a bit...........

So I say again....if you don't like what has happened to the forums (and to be honest, I don't either) ball up and lets make some changes. Let's get some of the older members back and have them moderate this place and bring in some new talent as well.

I am open to ideas here...but I am not going to waste time in this post if people just want to cry about what has happened without offering a way to change it.

Maybe there are enough forums on the web as is, maybe the one here is just taking up space. If that is the case I am happy to shut it down. But if you guys want it back to what it was then step up and lets get it back there.

Ideally, I would like to bring the old timers back in and have them run the forums....let them do it their way. Any of the old timers up for that challenge...it's a sort of put your money where your mouth is request.




To me these sound like, "Do my work for me. Moderate this place, spread the word, make it active again, so that I can get some ad banners, etc, and make money from your efforts."


I find that to be total cheese.


I don't really know what else I'd like to say about the whole thing. I guess what I would have liked to have seen was Matt issue a notice that the forum was closing on whatever date, and if you'd like to say farewell, then drop in and there's a thread open for just such a thing.

What I see happening is a pi@@ed off owner trying to save a dying horse by pawning it off on us.

I'm not angry in any way over this, in fact it doesn't affect me in any way at all, I just don't like the bitterness I'm picking up.

I could be way off base, but that's the feeling I get.


Now for some good news... I just saved a bundle on my car insurance!

And yes...the only real reason the forum remains relatively quiet lately is because most of us have full-time jobs to attend to etc, so we don't exactly have tons of free time to work on personal projects. To be honest, it's hard for me even to set aside a few hours to work on the minichallenges, but I do so because I, as a moderator and administrator of these forums feel that it's important to set a standard of participation for regular users.

But...as I've promised many of you through msn or wherever....when I finish work here at my job I'll definitely be posting it! In fact....here on the forums...you guys pretty much see everything that I work on...I hold nothing back and therefore post everything that I've got!

Hint hint.....I've got a helicopter crash, some cg timelapse animation and a crumbling tower of pisa to post pretty soon!

Hehehe yeah, Im looking forward to seeing those mate!

yeah that was actually what i was wondering in his post matt said that it costs him a lot to keep the forums up and i was just a bit worrited. but seeing as how thats not a problem i guess its about time we got the family together.
cant wait to see the good times roll back. especialy when/if joe gets back here.

Yes the thread is locked. It's a shame, Matt shut us up before everyone talk about the subject. I wanted to say some ideas for the forum, anyway.

It's really strange and funny as 3-4 members left the3dstudio forum and now the forum is really quiet. for me, it's a sign that the problem was started a long time ago and now it's getting everytime worse.

It's sure for the moment, it looks a bit "silent" in the industry. There are not a ton of new games (maybe Battlefield 2, not sure about the others", not new plugins to test (except Maxwell maybe), no new movies to talk (some at the beginning of the summer: fantastic four, etc.). now a lot of new techniques like SSS, etc, now new computer technology (computers are stuck on the same processor for months), etc.

And a lot of regular members got busy and didn't have time to post. One of them is me. Since 1 yr, I didn't post a lot, I have most of the time a 733mhz here that can handle 3d max for a long time. I made a lot of 3D for job, but most of them were made in few hours.

In one side, it will be sad if the forum close, but not sure if the 3d community really need this forum (hehe i mean the3dstudio, not here ). Is it me or I've never see something about the forum in the newsletter matt sends. Just think about cgtalk that put some lines for 9-10 best project at the moment) in each newsletter. Maybe the forum could be turned into a wip sections, like at ralph3d and 3dvf. In the forum, a lot of section were always quiet: "Resources wanted", "All About Hardware", "Show And Tell", etc. So the forum is like an old car that never be repainted, repair, etc. and now this is going to be a cheese (or maybe it's already a cheese )

So I just wanted to say that, I'm sorry as I didn't contribute enough maybe in the3dstudio forum (I post a lot, but didn't make a lot of 3D). I'm starting a new big and long project, more than my castle (well get a new computer soon), I'll try to post wips here and probably at the3dstudio too as there are some people like Elijah and Archer who aren't members here ). For the moment, I only have some sketch, really tough for the brain to think about this project).

To tell you all the trueth, I won't miss the3dstudio at all. Sure, it was a great place to go when I needed to learn how to texture a box, but when certain members *cough* archer got there, it went downhill almost instantly.

Without the firm backing of talented artists, an art forum can't survive no matter how big the site around it is. I remember I had the3dstudio as my homepage for years but after the site design changed and the forums were reset, there really wasn't any reason to be there. Any regulars that I use to enjoy talking to on the site were either gone or I could just email/msn and that's what happened to all of us.

Does any one remember the 3 word stories? The team challenge? The one on one modelling contests? There use to be so many reasons to go there and now everytime I browse there (a few times a week) all I see is people who I have never seen on there before asking people to do their work for them.

I think Matt needs to do more than just shutdown the forums. I can't remember the last time I actually looked at the3dstudio for any resource. He needs to rethink what he wants from that site. He can't keep thinking of it as a community now because it isn't, it's a business for him, and has been for years.

Cam you really ripped into Matt and I think you're probably the first to do it, I don't think I've ever seen him get so bitchy towards someone except when people use to ask for cracked versions of max lol.


Anyway those are my thoughts, now back to my disappearing act (I may actually have something to post here eventually though! lol)

Bah its just a webpage I can't say I miss some bits and bytes. The most important thing is the contacts we've all made and the fact that a lot of us visit here visibly demonstrates that.

I'll tell you what I do miss though, frenchtextures.com that was a great site.

it's a nice gesture, but every site that pumps up money is doin that, so it's not that special.

i listened to a piece of Archer's cg podcast last night and even he was kinda laughing about T3DS, signs are getting ever more clearer now
