while i do agree global this guy could be full of it but me told me that they work closely with auto desk and he was told by someone within autodesks ranks.
the four years could be in the air but it was so that they could slowly mold the programs together.
but who knows realy in the end its a rumor. i thought i would bring up to talk about here since we got max and maya lovers here haha.

that guy was probably expressing his opinion, there's no way he could know that for sure.

At this years National Autodesk Usergroup Meeting the spokesperson for Autodesk, Shawn Hendriks, outright and clearly stated that the two programs would not be merging, and that the company had no plans on intergrating them together at this time.
I agree with the three points that Global made, and that it would be silly and impossible for them to intergrate them together, we may see some tools shifting over between programs, but that may be it.
One thing that Autodesk has been doing to bring the programs closer together however was the point cash tools. They streamlined the ability to export animated meshs, and particle simulations to import into other programs. So even if you can't bring your rig over, you can bring your animation!
Anyways, regardless what program you use, they are all editing the same data, so it's best to know as many as you can, no?

doesn't the FBX format pretty much make everything interchangable between Max and Maya? textures, animations, models,...

Yeah FBX helps - but you're still unable to bring rigs across. Though as Aaron rightly says, with the developments of point cache you can port over your final anim for rendering, juat cache the deformations. It just means that you have to rig your character an whatever prog you want to animate with.
