Well...Vancouver Film School is insanely expensive so unless you're loaded...expect to be in debt for a LOOOONG time.

Honestly, I don't think that school is worth the cost, i mean, even if it is really good, thats like.. 2 years on a regular type job, just to pay for under a year of schooling, + cost of living, and Vancouver is uber expensive.
Look at Tyson, hes self taught and arguably the best one here.

I think it also depends on what kind of person you are. Maybe you need the structure of school to learn. Maybe being with other students who are motivated will motivate you to learn more and try harder. Maybe being in school will help you gain contacts who can help you in the future. It's true that you can teach yourself a lot... but you need to be that type of self-motivated person.

@hype: i just did a video tutorial on 3ds max, it's about afterburn, you can go check it out on youtube here pretty entry level.
awesome advises guys, i'll look into it with great interest, also i was thinking of flying to Vancouver to check out the school(i live in toronto), thinking of meeting the profs, maybe even sit through some classes.
yeah, i was thinking too cause lots of great guys like Tyson here, Allan mckay, and many other artists never took any formal training, but my parents are so not keen on learning stuff by myself, they would rather pay say 40,000 for school than to pay something like 100 buck for a gnomon DVD.
also my parents love degree programs, they just totally into a degree, and they also hate collages, since both of them came out of Universities, and never have any experience with art.
but school gives you something you can never get on your own, that is deadlines, and the people you get to meet, sure you can meet artists online but it's never that personal. and also the deadlines of assignments, (although i believe i would do anything to become a CG artist.) and i am more interested in special effects rather than character animations. also with DVDs and other form of tutorials you don't really get to ask questions, not the kind of interaction with the profs at school anyways.
i agree with you guys, it is pretty darn expensive to learn this stuff no matter what school you go to. a lot more research is in order.
and thx so much for the advices, really appreciate it.

I'd say the Art Institute ONLY because it's one of the only places I know where you can be certified in Maya Dynamics and Rendering which looks pretty good on a resume. Although it was handled through Alias, so I'm not sure how they go about it now.

Right now the Program I am at for university is pretty cool. There is the art/design side with technical stuff.
I have to take calculus, linear algebra, stats, marketing, business, physics, programming, and others. But I have design courses intertwined.
Personally I am more interested in the technical side, and I'm going to see if I hopefully looking pick up some more math classes and such.
