hey bzudo,
welcome to the forums!
your certainly welcome for the tutorials. more to come, eventually.
as for how i got in the industry, check out these 2 threads. Re-reading those, I am COMPLETELY SHOCKED that I wrote so much! But, i guess i'm glad it's there so I don't have to re-type it and can just cut & paste a link!

basically, i went to school for physical special effects, learned some very basic 3dsMax skills there, moved out here and realized I wasn't even close to ready for a job in visual fx. Worked in creature fx for many years, then slowly started teaching myself After Effects at home. Got my first job on a major movie without having ANY prior digital work experience or a demo reel. I just happened to know someone, and he knew I was a good worker in creature fx. since physical creature fx are happening less and less, i worked hard to stay in the digital side.
stick around here at SimplyCG, too. there's tons of people here who can teach you some amazing things (that's why i'm here - to learn from these guys and gals!) and don't be afraid to ask questions, even if they seem like beginner questions. What kind of stuff have you been teaching yourself? Feel free to post it, and we'd all be happy to give you some feedback on it.
let me know if anything in those threads or this one doesn't answer your question! and again, welcome!
