my first online class

I'm taking this, an 8 week thing with Allan McKay. Sure, some of what's covered is also covered in his training DVDs, and Pete Draper offers his own versions of some of it in his book, but when it comes to learning stuff, there is NOTHING like being able to actually have contact with your instructor. I'm really gonna make the most of it.
I don't think there's any secrecy or anything at all involved with the class, so I'll be posting every bit of what I do there.

mechis 520 posts09 Aug 2007sweet. I've heard good things about the cgsociety classes. I'd like to see something on mid to high poly modelling practices. I saw the low poly modelling one, but don't think that's really what I'm looking for...

30 Aug 2007So, this class started Sunday night. Downloaded over an hour's worth of SWEET video stuff from Allan. Nothing too complex yet, just cigarette smoke, steam, and clouds... Got my first intro to Afterburn - holy cow, it's pretty cool! I've always thought the interface looked super confusing and complex, but it's actually pretty easy to use! When the class is done, I can buy it for $100 off, so I will. And I'm pretty sure almost every single thing we do for the next 8 weeks will use it, so hopefully I'll be pretty good with it by that time.
When it gets near the end of the class, I'll post some of my rendered videos of my work. I'm trying to first do what he shows us, then use the technique in a real world kind of shot, which, since its visual effects, means I'm putting things into live footage. I already used the footage I shot for the transformers challenge. -

31 Aug 2007we don't get to chat live (like I think you guys do at AM, right?), but at the start of the week, we download videos, then upload our work, and then we chat about it and get feedback and stuff (from Allan, I mean. I'm not sure yet if it's ok to comment on other people's stuff like in a regular forum, since the whole reason for signing up was to get feedback and advice and direction from Allan specifically). We have some threads where we all chat and ask advice about other stuff, but as for commenting on each others actual work, we haven't done any of that yet - it's all Allan. It would be like commenting on the homework of the guy that sits next to you in high school chemistry. You're not in class to get advice from the guy sitting next to you. At least, that's the vibe I'm getting from it.
