Wacom pad, and 3D Controller questions

22 Nov 2005Hey, once again I have a few questions. This time about 3D Motion controllers, and wacom pads. I am going to do some PC upgrades and I was looking into getting a Wacom pad, but I have no clue which one to get. Also. my teacher recommended the Space traveler controller from 3Dconnexion. Do any of you have 3D Controllers or wacom pads? and if so, which model would you recommend? These questions are kinda vague, so I'll tell you what I will be using them for.
I want to use the Wacom pad to paint textures, make my own paintings, and do all my storyboarding on the PC using Alias Sketchbook. I was looking at the WACOM Intuos3 because of its large drawing area. Anyone here have a wacom pad they would recomend?
The only reason I would purchase a 3DMotion controller would be for improved speed when modeling, and moving in the viewports. I can get all the controllers at discount academic prices. I listed them below.
Spacepilot for 299$ down from 500$
Spaceball 5000 for 199$ down from 500$
Space traveler for 119$ down from 200$
Any recomendations? -

I was talking to me teacher today in class, and he was telling me how cool the Intuos3's are. I often find myself wanting to draw in photoshop freehand, but with my mouse I dont have the freedom a pencil has. The pads will give me all the fredom I need.

23 Nov 2005Thanks for the link - I guessed it was something like that. I can't believe they are so expensive though! (I guess it's a limited customer base they are selling to) I'm not too sure that I'd get on with using one though - my left hand is always at the keyboard using shortcuts I think it would be a hassle to keep jumping from keyboard to trackball. (now if they could come up with a foot operated version...
)
But the tablet will be good value I'm sure. btw, I know some people that use a tablet exclusively for 3D too (it would take some getting used to but may be worth it to save those hand cramps after a long 3D session) -
24 Nov 2005if you are going to use a graphics tablet extensively for texturing i would go along wiht an intuous but if u just need it to do texturing and conceptualisation on a smaller scale i sugest getting a graphire or graphire2.
theyre a lot easier to handle especially if ur traveling a lot. -
Toni 65 posts25 Nov 2005i use a Wacom Graphire A6 size at my work for heavy DTP purposes
wich means alot of per pixel painting and creating textures, my screen res. is 1.6x1.2k but even for it's small size it's no problem , altough A5 wouldn't hurt 
it took some time gettin used to it but once you do you'll love it! -
25 Nov 2005I have Wacom's Graphite 2 tablet, and it has been serving me without fail for years now.
One of the major advantages for me was that the pen wasn't battery-powered, so it was quite light. -
Bardur 78 posts25 Nov 2005i own a intous 2 (i?m gonna buy intous 3) and i LOVE it.. now i almost can?t use photoshop without it.. it is awsome to make textures, painting and whatever.. my friend owns a Wacom graphire.. BUT his sucks
(and he says so too) the tablet is so small and the pen doesn?t have much sencetivity so every time he draws with it it makes a choppy/ugly line...
i would personaly recomend Intous3.. and it?s never too big so the bigger the better (IMO)
BTW: does anyone have experience using Wacom Cintiq (the screen tablet)???
