You need to just practice painting over seams in photoshop. Healing tool, clone tool. Just takes practice.

my problem was actually about how to get to the point where I could paint over seams. heh...

I was messing with xsi a lot this past week and I finally figured out how to get a new UV of the seam area and also how to blend in a new texture in place of that seam.
Thanks for suggesting the different 3d painting applications... I may check those out in the near future.
For people interested, here's a MAX tutorial that shows how to do the texture blending (I did it in XSI, but this tute pointed me in the right direction).
