mechis 520 posts20 Mar 2008So, I was helping administer a practical exam today and when I was helping out the patients, I noticed that one of the exam proctors was watching Pixar's short, "Lifted." He leaned over to me and said, "My son made that." And I thought, what do you mean? He's an animator? or an artist at Pixar? It turns out his son is Gary Rydstrom (http://imdb.com/name/nm0003977/), the guy who thought of the story and directed it... and is an oscar winning sound designer. Crazy. -

Unfortunately, the guy was the head proctor of the exam (North Eastern Regional Boards-- licensing test for dentistry) and that meant he wasn't allowed to tell me anything personal about himself. I did ask though. haha...

20 Mar 2008had a similar situation happen when i was working at bestbuy. an old guy came in asking about call of duty 2 and i inquired as to why he was looking to buy it and he said his son was an artist for infinity ward, he even gave me his contact info and I LOST IT THE NEXT DAY WHEN I WENT TO GO LOOK FOR IT. granted this was a couple years ago and it wasnt as big as the guy you met but i was still fairly upset about losing it.

I ran into Jason Schleifer (my animation hero) i knew his face from the extras in the lord of the rings DVDs but when i saw him i couldn't put my finger on who he was.... moments after he left BAMB i remembered who he was drives me nuts to this day. we even talked a bit... AHHH

RWilson 199 posts23 Mar 2008heh, my mom used to go to church with Pete Doctors mom. guy is from bloomington mn. i kept trying to get the moms to hook me up with a play date, but that didnt happen.
I also was helped by some guy at subway who's uncle worked on shrek as a FX TD so thats kinda cool.
siggraph is a great place to run into people. i remember 3ish years ago ReelFX didnt want a booth on the floor so they drove up an RV, put up a tent and had a kegger out in the parking lot of the convention center. i was just hangin out with those guys drinkin some beers and a the animation mentor brass and pixar folks came over and hung out. it was a good afternoon. -

I was helping out a freind who owns a village shop in one of the most touristy place here in North Wales last sumemr, and he got me to work on the till for an hour or so one day. A New Zealand couple came up to the till with their stuff, and I asked where abouts from NZ they were from (I could tell by the accent) and they said Wellington...got me thinking and I said that it's my ultimate dream to go to Wellington to work for a little known company called WETA - turns out that the guy was a sculptor for the workshop, and she was in charge of finance etc for WETA - one of the happiest days of my life - he he. I got the contact details etc, and were still in touch. This industry rocks!! So many friendly people. -
