Other Organic Jobs

07 Oct 2008I have my advanced modeling class this quarter. My teacher is doing something new this quarter, he is making us research the marked place for are model. He also is pushing us to stay away from characters. What I was wondering was what are some other organic modeling jobs(hopefully some that would require zbrush) that have a demand, and what companies have the demand?

07 Oct 2008Wait...you're taking an advanced modelling class and your teacher doesn't want you to focus on characters? Way to prepare your students for the workforce there professor :/
Not sure what exactly you're going to model that's organic but not a character. I guess a plant or something. Try Massive Black...they specialize in all kinds of organic stuff, although...most of it is characters. Not sure where else you'd find a company that needs organic models that aren't characters... -

08 Oct 2008Yeah, not sure I agree with avoiding character modelling in an advanced course - but there is a call for solid modeling that isn't character or creature based. On the thing I'm working on right now we have lots of different trees, dozens of plants and grasses and plenty of vegetables. Some of the structures and buildings are a little organic (or if not they are time / weatherworn or something)
My guess is that animals would be classed as character or creature modeling so it's worth checking that with the prof. -
08 Oct 2008Thanks for responding. I definitely agree with all the comments, and sorta figured that's the response I would get. I think I will do character with zbrush or maybe a weapon with all sorts of character parts.

08 Oct 2008Yea maybe you could do a creature/machine hybrid or something...something both mechanical and organic. Scrolling threw the entries of the old CGSociety Machineflesh challenge might be a good place to find inspiration.

Environment modelling is far from hard surface.
and in fact, it's going to be a big field by the time you graduate. With more and more companies beginning to use camera projection as a means to an end, you may be called upon to create some environments. However, if you want to do characters, then do a character. Talk to your instructor and tell them that you want to focus on character modelling, i'm sure that if you present it to them articulately, and plead your case in a diplomatic manner, then you'll reach a compromise. But if you want to do character modelling, beware, you better start practicing Not trying to deter you, just saying that organic modeling is an extremely competitive market. But keep us posted man, you can learn a lot here, and maybe even teach us all a thing or two.

Yah I definitely understand the competitiveness of a character modeling career, and I really don't think I would have what it takes to make it in the movies. I am not being pessimistic but more honest, plus I like so many aspects of CG that I don't think I could devote the time just on characters that I would need to. However I have seen in my research there is a bit more of a demand for video game modelers. The ideas I came up with are:
(I can do 1 or as many as a I cant get done)
Model a simpler character and actually put it in the torque engine.
Model this tree monster I drew up and did a clay model of found here.
Jail or some type of environment like zachm linked to. (thank, very awesome example of a zbrush environment.)
Vehicle of some time (not a car).

09 Oct 2008rather tha nthe torque engine, you should invest in a copy of unreal tournament 3 or crysis and play around with their level and character tools. much more robust in my opinion. and it makes your work look pretty as hell ;D

09 Oct 2008Can you upload a 3d modeled character into there level editor. If thats the case I will definitely look into that. I was planning on dumping my character off onto a buddy of mine who is going to school for game design.

09 Oct 2008yeah custom characters are definitely a viable option in either engine. as long as their biped at least. more limbs makes it a lot more complicated because their engines are setup to streamline the rigging process of bipeds for in-game use.
