Environment modelling is far from hard surface.

and in fact, it's going to be a big field by the time you graduate. With more and more companies beginning to use camera projection as a means to an end, you may be called upon to create some environments. However, if you want to do characters, then do a character. Talk to your instructor and tell them that you want to focus on character modelling, i'm sure that if you present it to them articulately, and plead your case in a diplomatic manner, then you'll reach a compromise. But if you want to do character modelling, beware, you better start practicing

Not trying to deter you, just saying that organic modeling is an extremely competitive market. But keep us posted man, you can learn a lot here, and maybe even teach us all a thing or two.
