ptaverner 379 posts17 Jan 2006Is anyone here running a 3D ap on a laptop? If so, is it running well, and what's the config of the LT?
I'm currently looking at LTs with a 17" screen, but thought I'd check here first.
Any info would be great!

17 Jan 2006Hey Pete. I've been using a Laptop exclusively for the last two and a bit years at home and all is pretty good, (I do seem to have some probs running Maya as it slows right down when switching from one viewport to another... but I think that's an ATI issue) Max, however, runs very smoothly and I went from beginner to employed just from the work I did on my Laptop.
It's pretty dated now as it's nearly 3 years old
IBM r32ThinkPad:-
P4 2Ghz Mobile (a stepping thing as it runs slower on battery - and at 0 GHz when turned off!
)
512 MB DDR Ram (Originally 256 which worked fine - the upgrade didn't show any massive improvment and I worked for about 18 months with 256)
16MB Ati Mobility Radeon (Yep, just 16MB and I still don't know the model number... I think it has 16MB on board and uses another 16MB system Mem)
26GB Hdd (would recommend quite a bit more - I'm struggling)
14" or maybe 15" LCD... not quite sure as it broke soon after getting the damn thing - I was stuck on an island at the time and it was too much hassle to get it sorted when I got back to Bangkok... so I'm using a 17" CRT which I got cheap and would certainly recommend if you will be using it extensively at home)
But the above certainly goes to show that 3D on a LT is more than possible -
17 Jan 2006I've been using a laptop for the past year as well.
Runs 3dsmax very well.
If you're going to use a laptop for 3d, be sure to get a mouse/mini-mouse for it.
The one I'm using is 1.7ghz with 256mb ram + 32mb graphics. Not the best but it performed exceedingly well. -

I spent some time over the last 2 days checking some models out.
A mouse would indeed be included in the buy.
A 17" screen is on the wish list!
A seperate CRT will be set up also.
I'll keep you posted as to what I get.

18 Jan 2006If you're going to be doing heavy graphics on it I would definitely say check out to see how the dual core centrinos are shaping up since they were just released.
Right now I have a small thin and light Gateway laptop. 14" widescreen, 1.7ghz Pentium M, 512mb of ram, 80gb hard drive, 32mb video card (yep, it sucks, but this is mostly for school work so). It's fine with photoshop, not sure about max though since I haven't even installed it on there. I can tell you it can run Windows 2003 as a Domain Controller from VmWare fine though. So as far as performance goes it is quite good, I can only imagine how the dual core centrinos are.
If you're not looking for portability/battery life at all check out the Athlon 64 and Turion notebooks (even though the Turion is mobile version of the Athlon 64 it's battery life still isn't as good as the Centrino systems).
Some brands to stay away from are Acer (they tend to crap out pretty fast and we had about a 50% return rate on some at staples because they were defective) and Compaq if you are worried about parts breaking (about 3 of the 5 people I know wiht the Compaqs had issues with pieces breaking very easily).
And be sure to get a laptop that you can handle before you buy it. Although some companies have good track records there are certain models that you will pick up and they will feel like they are made with cardboard (the 14" compaqs, the acers, and a few others I can't think of off hand).

im getting the Toshiba Qosmio G25.. its specs are crazy (a bit on the higher end price, but ive tried max on it, and it models like a breeze)...besides... i feel looks are really important for presentation work.

p.s. This is a replacement for my dinosaur desktop. Also a Dell. It runs at a whopping 6xxMHZ. ( XPS T600r ) I've had it for 5-6 years. It's what I used when first learning 3D. Time for a new PC, so I decide to go for a laptop. ( sorry kids, no college for you! ) hahahahaha Kidding. -

24 Jan 2006wow incredible lap Peter! I got the Dell 9300, with only 1 gig and with the 6800 Geforce and it works great!
Did you use some coupon? When I bought mine, you could have a 35% off coupon in USA! but not in Canada -
