apparently the game is supposed to be out next fall. Congrats to Will Wright for making another sweet game.
And this definately needs to be the future of gaming, especially for the next gen games so they don't cost a whole lot to make because of content. heres the full video which has will wright explaining more things.

im not sure about that it still takes a LOT of time to build engines and code in all that physics stuff in addition to programming this whole procedural system that analyses skeletal structure and animates accordingly.

Yes, I have to agree with that but the thing is that one base engine for, lets say sports, is needed, then the content can be more easily added/edited, plus player creations. So there wouldn't be a whole new engine everytime just edited to fit the certain needs each time. SO it would take awhile to make the initial engine. From there the content would be able to be created much faster.

yeah but it wont suit all generes and it doesnt seem like you can make characters that have a lot of depth and detail.

No depth and detail?!... Were you watching the same video Franky?! I think going from protozoic life form to seeding the universe is quite deep.
The fact that most of what you see there is procedural is amazing! The fact that you can come up with a crazy creature design, with bizarre biometric oddities and then have the program animate it's behaviour, walk cycles, attack and feeding patterns is... well, as an animator I find it astounding (and also quite worrying for my future employment! lol)
Sure it won't suit all genres... but this one looks like it has tackled a number of them all in one go.

yeah well the point i was trying to make ( i tried to bring this up on the show aswell) is that it doesnt give you much creative freedom. you as an artist do not have much say in how the new walk will look or act sure u could tweak the code until u get it perfect but then i dont see how that is much different from actually keyframing it. the same applies for actual geometric detail. what i saw on the characters was a blob of polygons that surrounded the skeletal structure with minor variation in thickness apart from the carebear which was most probaby modeled in a 3d application. so you see you cant put all that much detail into them unless you use prefabricated props and addons. so just to clarify i was talking about the geometric complexity of the models not their movements , behavioural patterns etc. we will always need animators , modelers , 2d artists and renderslaves because simply put u cant form an algorythm for creativity.

Oookkkk....
All to technical for me, all i have to say is thats the whole thing looks awsome and this will definately change gaming as we know it. This thing is gunna be like red alert, or the sims, causing tons of other gaming companies to follow the same genre or concept.
Definately on my pre order list.

Cool!!!!
But if you blow up another players planet, is it truely gone? What happens if you've been playing for a while, set up a nice little community, and Cameron comes along and blows your planet up?
I would really like to play this!!!!!!!

Yeah I was pondering that too

it only gets destroyed in ur universe . they still have their planet in theirs. so if u do destroy a planet it just doesnt update it anymore. well thats what im asuming. the material from other players used to populate ur universe is only for interaction and detail i dont think they will be able to transmit that data in realtime ... if so you could have as many as 10,000 ufo's attacking ur planet at any given time ... that wouldnt be fun. i think once it has downloaded the players planet the computer controls it and updates it while following the trends that the original player has set.

But, if you remember earlier in the presentation there was the other player's city, attacking the dude's city... if that was computer generated based off the other players trends fair enough but I was hoping it was multiplayer with direct interaction. If not, it would seriously take away from the game's enticement if you ask me. But I'd still play it.
mmm ice cream

Yeah, as far as I can tell this is single player only - with all the different races traits having come from another player but 'played' by the computer (strange that the opposing beasts themselves looked the same in this demo if that is the case....)
In truth I think they are missing a massive multiplayer opportunity here, but I wouldn't know how a multiplayer would be implemented (I know I'd be pretty pissed if I'd spent the last month developing a super intelligent civilisation from a single celled life form only to have Cam blow it up on a whim!) - Anyhoo, if the game is as detailed as it looks in this demo, then I still think it would have very long lasting appeal (and would undoubtedly spawn a massive online community anyways)
Just quickly going back to what Franky was saying about creativity... I take your point and agree that creativity cannot be solved in an algorithm. But if this game is all it is cracked up to be, then for the first time it's the player himself that truly brings the creative element to the game, rather than following someone elses predesigned (albeit creative) path.

All good points.
I would shudder every time I played just knowing that Cameron was hiding in Uranus.

Holy shit multiplayer would rock, they should implement it so you could be a cell on your friends body if he gives you a buddy code (that would rock).
Or how about you make a parasite city that in huge numbers could overpower the larger mobs, creating new viruses and destroying their immune system.
The ultimate power would be god

Which i obviously would have :O!
