Well I saw it! And I must warn you that it was WONDERFUL!
A perfect "fairy-tale" movie....VERY much in the same spirit as "James in the Giant Peach" (another work by Dahl). I found the quirkiness of the characters and setting to be a perfect match with the storyline, and Johnny Depp was TERRIFIC! Such a creepy, but loveable character. The music score was another great one from Elfman, and the movie kept me laughing all the way through...totally funny
***SPOILDERS AHEAD:
-I thought the oompa loompas were great (and enjoyed the "back story" regarding their history). I also liked that not every song they sang was simply different lyrics to the same music (as in the old movie)...each song was different, covering a different genre of music. One thing I also respected about their song-and-dance skits is that Burton DIDN'T sell-out to pop-culture references (ie...he didn't have them breakdancing, or singing to popular music etc etc). Some of their voices were just a little too obviously just regular voices with pitch-modifications, but I didn't let that ruin anything
-The effects were great! From the squirrels, to the waterfall, to the blue-berry girl, everything really fit the style of the movie (even if a lot of it did look obviously CG)
-I loved the father-dentist backstory, and thought it was a great way to tie up the movie. And I like that the father wasn't made out to be an evil antagonist that Johnny was running from or something (ie...he wasn't a "bad guy")...he was simply an old man that wanted his son's teeth clean
-Every actor was perfect for their role, I thought. There was not a single person that I would have switched. I especially like the actors that played Charlie, and his grandpa (and of course we all love Johnny Depp haha)
Well...I'd better stop as I've already written tons! Haha...it's funny though...I had such a great time throughout this entire movie, that I'd say I even enjoyed it more than Star Wars III and War of the Worlds! It was just so fun, and I didn't have a single complaint about it (as opposed to those other 2 movies, that I thought could be improved a lot).
Btw...I thought the puppet scene (after they begin their tour), with all the puppets on fire and stuff was priceless...and the "puppet hospital and burn-victim center" shown later in the movie, made it all that much more funny!
