Glu3D is a very good quick fluid simulator but like you said you could also go for real wave or real flow depending on your needs.
It's a very intensive program but can produce some impressive results and accurate solutions. For what i wanted to create in the past i found it too full on but it is a good stand alone product in which you import your wave slumation particles/meshes into your native 3D package.
Give it a boo if your interested.
Cheers,
~Todd.

GLU3D very easy to use especially compare to realflow, and it works well with reactor and particle flow

Maybe check out this:

Its what they used for Scooby Doo 2 for the tar monster.
Looks fantastic, but I don't think its available for purchase. Maybe if you're lucky you can get a beta version for testing.

yeah some of those are nice, but!!! why can't people create dynamic simulations at the correct speed!! its the same with rag dolls, hair sim, rigid, softbodys espiecially fluids!!! there 99% of the time tooo slow. its as if they feel they are getting more value for money by using it at the cached speed. thats what happens when you get programmers and artists that don't communicate

AMEN.
Haha...I ALWAYS find that people calculate their sims WAAY too slow. It's like having gravity at half it's regular values is "hip and cool". Heh heh
