After using the difference boolean tool onto 2 parts of my model, It created some new edges going diagnolly across. This edge makes the face look a little ugly, so i tried deleting it. On one side it deleted just fine, but on the other it made the face very bright.
Before
After
Is there a way I can make that face the same as the other?

Hey - if you select the object and then go to Edit Polygons >Normals > Soften/Harden - that should do the trick.

Doing that made the white piece turn into an even brighter shade of white.
edit: I fixed it by going to Edit Polygons > Normals > Reverse
With that fixed, all that's left is the grouping problem. I'm not too clear on how Maya groups it's objects, but I want each part that an arrow is pointing to in
to be seperate objects, however I can't seem to be able to seperate them.

Hey - yeah the revrse normals was gonna be my next step if that one didnt work.
If you want to un-group go to edit>ungroup

I tried that, but they refuse to stay ungrouped

have you used the outliner or hypergraph yet? They are two things in maya that should always be at your side. And they will help you to see what you have grouped or ungrouped in order to keep your scene organized.

I've used the outliner a little bit, but haven't touched the hypergraph yet.
I've got a question to why the render quality gets crappified when saved as a .jpg?

Also when I try moving the whole model that i've made, it kinda jumbles up and if I move it too much, Maya crashes.

While smoothing out some edges on my arm, 3 edges produced some nasty black shadows on one side of the shoulder, but came out perfectly on the other side. I can't figure out the reason behind this since the thing is nearly perfectly symmetrical. Hardening the edge makes the shadow go away, but I'd like to have it smoothed out. Any advice?

have you tried reversing the normals on those selected faces? It looks like those faces somehow became reversed or doubled up.
if you cant get it working, post a link to a file with just that peice and I can take a look at the file, Maybe then somebody here or myself can see the file and figure out what is up.

select all the faces, and go Edit Polygons - Normals - Conform, or set to face.
