Suitable glass materials

I'm working on a model of a small space fighter for a freind's film project. I've hit a snag.
I can't get the material for the canopy looking good. I can get it OK by just playing around with the Opacity of the material and then tweaking the specularity attributes, but it just isn't good enough really. Is there any particular method for good glass panes? There must be, and I wish I could just find it myself, but I want to do a good job so I'm looking to you guys for help
!

03 Mar 2007try installing and using this shader, I think, you'll be happy with the results.

03 Mar 2007Hey Will - when ever I need to make a glass, I normally use this shader;

If it's not exactly what you want, you could always take the shader apart, see what makes it behave like it does and try and recreate it in your own way, things like index refraction etc will stay the same all the time for glass, so just take the main attributes from it, and tweak until you've got the desired effect.

I installed it as per the read me, but I can't find it for the life of me. Where is it listed? Under mental ray or something? I feel very Noobish now :s!

19 Mar 2007Mental ray does that sometimes, if it doesn't appear in the 'Use Renderer' List, always check your plugin manager first, and go from there

Will J 215 posts24 Mar 2007I would like to know how you do it. I try to experiment with as many ways of doing things as possible.
There's been a change of plans now anyway, the canopy of the ship is going to be a reflective gold, like an astronaughts visor. That should be easier to do as long as I can get the colour right. I'll still mess around with glass though!
