I'm afraid I have another Noobish question for you folks. After I have been working for a while, the programme gets extremely laggy. I know this is just the history piling up, but I don't know how to deal with it. Is there a way to delete all the history, or limit the number of actions saved? At the moment I'm relying on just re-booting maya and this works fine, but it is bothersome. As always, any help much appreciated

click on the 'undo' item in the categories list and you can change the undo queue size / turn it off etc.
What type of system are you using it on and what version do you have? I'm almost unable to use Maya on my laptop as it lags out badly if I go from 4 views to a single view... I think it's a driver issue, but then my laptop has seen better days... -

23 Apr 2007Well....I've used Maya enough to know that the shortcut for deleting your history is Alt+F4

! I'll give them all a try. Though I already use delete by type > history, and this never solves it on my machine, though I use it alot when modelling. I'm using v. 7.0 on a 2.4Ghz lappy with 768Mb RAM and 64Mb graphics.
This week we're getting four new super high end machines in college that are "industry level!" I was helping inpack them the other day and the graphics cards were the size of DVD boxes! HUGE! They will be exclusively for people who want maya and 3D max etc. Yeehaa! -
23 Apr 2007Oolala...nice! It does sound like your old machine needs an upgrade for sure.....under a gig of ram and 64mb graphics??? :O....well I guess it would have been hot in 1996!!!

23 Apr 2007Yeah I'm thinking it's because it's a laptop... Ati graphics card? Maya doesn't seem to like Laptops.
hehe... I've got 16Mb of graphics on mine

Jonathan 480 posts23 Apr 2007It's funny, I was trying the XSI demo on my laptop (IBM T40, 32mb ATI card) and it wasn't too fun.
I'm spoiled by my C2D/8800gtx desktop.
Too bad I'm not rich so I can buy some quad-core laptop to use while on the go. -
24 Apr 2007Im running Maya on 1gb of video memory, 2gb of ram, and 3.4ghz amd 64 processor and it will still lag after a while. Maya progressively drains your computers memory so just restart it like every 30-45 mins to keep it fast.

My home computer is better than my work computer, and it slows down after a good hour or 2 usually, much quicker if I'm switching between photoshop, mozilla and maya. But at work I can usually go 5-8 hours straight with maya, photoshop, mozilla with 5 different tabs open, and zbrush, before I need to restart (unless I get a fatal error
). My work computer is much much older than my home computer too, it only has 512 mb ram. I don't know what it is. -

24 Apr 2007yea my maya freezes after about 30mins to an hour, for no reason, and even after completely whiping my drive it still happens. Waiting on Maya 9...

24 Apr 2007Even if it is only using 512mb it still shouldn't be that laggy... Pretty similar specs at my last job, (used a single 6800Ultra I think) and never experienced a slowdown (well, at least only when expected ie. lots of geometry or dynamics...)

Will J 215 posts24 Apr 2007Once I get to a high number of polys or surfaces (say, a model of a ship for example) I have to restart every 20 or so actions, let alone mintutes! It gets very frustrating.

Will... call Autodesk! Get the most up to date drivers... sort out your memory leak... no-one can work like that!
Darkside... not sure if Maya would take advantage of the sli enabled nVidia setup. Maya doesn't 'officially' support a dual screen setup last I heard!

Jonathan 480 posts24 Apr 2007SLi doesn't help with any 3d application. Even in games, the PC only "sees" 512mb of vram that it will utilize, becuase Nvidia hasn't put in the effort to share the vram. However, SLI is still better than Crossfire. I have had a 7800gtx, 7900gtx, and a 7950gx2, and the 7950gx2 was just like one 7900gt or gtx in 3D apps.
But again, Maya only knows you're using one 7900gtx, even though "dxdiag" tells it otherwise. -

(2) more money for Nvidia, because it just about doubles their user base. -
