01 Nov 2005Well, quadrupeds are not easy in general (not yet anyhoo as I've not much practice with 4 legged creatures) but I'm now rigging a char with no real idea as to what is needed of him. I know that he'll be fairly prominent throughout the project - so with that in mind I'm doing IK/FK trunk (Maybe a spline IK tail too so we can apply dynamics to it)
The basics are there now and the IK/FK switch is all done - I'm just not very happy with the way the IK is behaving right now. I'm thinking it may be my approach to it (as I'm using spline IK for the trunk) - but there is little information to be found on the net about trunks. -

I guess it's not really a Maya thing in truth. I mean I'm not looking for an ABC guide to rigging it, more of an approach thing, more to see if I am going in the right direction.
Anyhoo - I spent most of today finishing it off (Quite a few probs with the front legs and stuff) But a lot of the time was on redoing the trunk. I won't know if I'm happy with it until it's all skinned and I begin animating - I may well need to go back to the drawing board though
Tricky though - I've be watching some reference, and also have the advantage of unexpectedly bumping into them on the streets here, but man are those things versatile! Just hope I can do it justice! -
