You could well be changing the local orientation when you parent the pylons. I think Claymations grouping idea would be the best way to go about it.

Good to see it's sorted. Personally I wouldn't go with expressions as it's most likely just local orientation issue. I always go with direct connections wherever possible, avoiding constraints and expressions and the like, so making sure the objects are in the same local space is important to me.
I'm just on my way out but I can take you through it if you like.
