Barely, what seems like about six months after Autodesk released version 8.5 of Maya, comes another version, this time called Maya 2008 (obviously coinciding with Siggraph).
Looking at the , it should have been called Maya 8.5.1.
Not sure there are going to be many people paying $1200 to upgrade from 8.5, for a few extra polygon tools.
I know that comes across as very cynical, but I think the frequency of full-price upgrades is a little too often!

That's not being cynical, thats called being a realist. These companies don't actually care for the consumer, like you said no one wants to pay about a grand a year for each license they own for minor upgrades. It's the same with all the major software creators. Adobe, Autodesk, and those other big ones (can't name them anymore, Macromedia and Alias, because they are owned by those other guys!)
