A few general tips on maritime 3D modelling in general (if it's got corners and sharp edges like a battleship I model it in polys in maya, and I use the very powerful NURBS tools in Rhino 3D if its all curvy and horrid like a racing powerboat

.) Firstly, making nice hulls is an absolute b*****d to get the hang of. Perseverance and experimentation is the key. Also, try not to getb intimidated by the complexity of a model, just concentrate on one little area at a time, the you will look back and say "whoa! How did I do that!" Good luck matey
