are there any tips/tricks to look for while using maya?
my machine is ok i think....
pentium 4 dual core 3.2 ghz
3 gigs of Ram (although running xp media edition so only using 2gigs at once)
any suggestions, sorry i know this is kind of broad

could you explain why you think it's 'slow'?
maybe post some scenes your rendering for comparison?

Without knowing anything about what your trying to do it's hard to give you any solid advice, there's so many factors. Are your textures too big? Geometry too dense? Render settings too high?

yeah, like they've said before me, we would need to know more info.
one thing you could do (you might have already done this) is to click the check box to use all available processors (it's under the Batch Render Options), I believe it is off by default. Other than that, we need to know more about your scene.

Insufficient information, though it's most likely either... too many lights, final gather / global illum / caustics settings jacked up too high, or too many reflections and shadow rays.

Just set the samples to 10/10, Raytracing, FG, and GI at max, minimum of 12 lights and your good to go.
Err, jk don't do that. =)
