hey UV mapping is all about practice, its kind of like a puzzle, but people usually do it similar ways. you can find some good tuts on or you can check out a sweet pelting plugin for maya. its here
install and follow the tuts. its a pretty fast and fun tool to use.

3dbuzz has some good VTMs on basic UV mapping for their character and vehicle rigging series.
Again, very basic but it's sort of like music. If you learn how to read the basics you can teach yourself the rest with practice.
