Is it possible to key frame a child in AE 7. I have an object that is parented to my camera. I want that object follow the camera for a period of time and then un-parent itself.
Can I keyframe this or do I just have to create copies of the layer, one parented the other not and put them end to end?

nope, you can't animate a "parenting" turning on or off.
just goto the spot you want it to unparent, hit SHIFT CTRL D (should split the layer right at the timeline slider), and unparent the end part. that way it should already be lined up where it need to be. You may want to turn on a Position keyframe at that frame, just so if you move the timeline slider and then change the position of the 2nd layer, it will still be lined up when the unparenting happens.
