I was thinking, wouldn't Combustion be easier to use than Nuke or AE since it has the RPF file format, or does AE have a similar file format? Just curious.
you can use RPF with AE, but Combustion does have unbelievable interactivity with Max. You can paint directly on objects, just like BodyPaint, you can entirely replace textures, all kinds of crazy stuff!
but combustion's interface sucks. i can't speak for anyone but myself, and I hate the interface. I hate the little panel where you order the layers, and I hate its nodal view.
it has a great painting pallet too.

Yeah, I saw a tutorial about the 3dsmax/combustion paint thing
I won a copy of combustion in a school animation contest back in highschool, but when I tried to use it the interface was horrible and it consistently crashed and was slow.
haha Hype, it was more or less like that with the license. They wanted to make sure I was legal. That was the first and last time I've had that happen. Maybe they were thinking if I care enough to own it I must really know how to use it right.
