Artflame Noir 172 posts19 Apr 2007This is the first time I make a video in AE only, on my own (so no editing guy this time)...
all keying was done in AE... I have made some complex keying tools by combining different presets and it came out rather well.. considering that my green screen was self made and it had cost me less than 100 bucks for a very big piece of it...
all color corrections were made in AE, but the final one will be done in Fusion.
so here are the pics.. if you want, later I can throw some short video parts in.

21 Apr 2007Here's the major things that jumped out at me first and foremost. The black levels in the BG and FG don't match. Thus, they do not look as if they were shot at the same time and place.
I took that Green plate into photoshop and looked at the channels individually. The green had the most contrast, so I threw a levels on it, and got the second pic. With a garbage matte around the outside of the cymbals, and a tight roto for the top reflective part, this would make a great matte for that area. I can't really work on it here at work, but this weekend I'll try to get it in AE at home (or maybe i'll bring in my laptop or something) and see how it works. But experiement on your own, too!
Once those two things are taken care of, it'll look 80% better, then we can start looking at other details like edges and stuff. -
Artflame Noir 172 posts21 Apr 2007ok man tnx... I'll try that tonight... I think that glow comes form the fog.. as I have some of it moving across those hills.. I'm also experimenting to key it out in fusion and export than as a TIFF.
And true.. I haven't thought of that FG/BG blackness..
I'll try both crush the FG and lightening the BG.. till they match...

Artflame Noir 172 posts25 Apr 2007hey Hypey.. . here's a little update... I made a new key preset to speed up the workflow and in the process came up with a nice key for the drum problem..
looks ok? there's just a slight alpha on some of the drum skins but they ground transparent anyway so it looks good..
will post it with BG once it's done

25 Apr 2007I see you got a fairly nice AE key pull which is nice but there are some halo issues, invisible objects and in your latest jpg your chewing at the matte which is causing detail to vanish. There are a few things you can do in Fusion (which you said youd just use for CC) to make them even better. I'm basing this off my knowledge of Keylight in Shake which is also a nodal system so the concept should still be the same. What you'll want to do for you key is use a Keylight node to pull a hard matte. Solid black and solid white, dont worry about a soft edge at this point. Take that generated alpha and dilate one to make it a few pixels larger. Then you will invert the alpha channel. Use this alpha as a garbage matte plugged into a keylight node. Going back to your first key make a second branch and now erode this version (shrinking it in a few pixels), this will then be plugged into your hold out matte of the 2nd keylight.
Basically what this entire process did was remove all the green screen except the area right next to your FG objects and your hold out matte crunched all your FG objects to a solid white so all you need to do is pull a light key with your second keylight to get a crisper edge and transparency for all your blurred objects.
If this doesn't make any sense I can take a screenshot of a shake script tree that uses this concept. -

thanx for the advice I'll try and do it in AE, as I don't have Keylight for Fusion.. and infected by Hypes enthusiasm for AE I kind of decided to take on the challenge and fight my way through this project using only Ae lol...

01 May 2007Artflame, you could still get some great keys out of Fusion without Keylight - it has a great built-in keyer! On "Sin City", using Fusion, we had access to keylight but always used the built-in one anyway.
also, if you have keylight for AE, I believe Fusion will recognize it. I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure Fusion will recognize all AE plugins and allow you to use them. -

I used ultrakeyer a few times and while faster than keylight in AE in terms of tweaking stuff around. I found that keylight, once you figure it out a little better does the same job...
I'm not so good in Fusion yet to able to build camera maps as need for this video. I mostly use it for CC.. I should get my ass up once and learn it a little better now that I had a chance to get a seat of my own lol...
and yeah lol.. always wanted to ask you what did you do on Sin City and what was used for keying.. it's one of my most favorite films ever..
