Adobe Premiere - no sound on imported MPG files

mitm2002 68 posts10 Jan 2008Anybody know how to resolve the lack of sound on MPG files imported into Adobe Premiere? The sound plays fine in Windows Media Player, but after importing into Premiere, there is no audio whatsoever - only the video footage (which if it makes any difference, was shot on a Sony Handycam.) Thanks in advance! -
15 Jan 2008Probably a codec issue? Maybe try doing an mpg to avi conversion (w/audio) and then import into AE.

16 Jan 2008hahah the old sony handy cam. Yeah almost all programs hate that mepg type coming out from sony. Convert using cheap codec converter. Ton on the web.
goodluck. oh.........I forgot the software that comes with the camera..hmmm........image something or other, if you burn to a disk using the software it will convert for you then just take off your disk. it will con vert the sound. -
Jonathan 480 posts18 Jan 2008I had the same issue while trying to edit video files from a Sony camcorder with Premiere.
Sony camcorders = codec issues
Hence why I'm still a fan of the HDV, until the HD cameras are up to par in performance, quality, and codec issues.

Have Sony Camera and also found that on importing into Adobe premiere, the video is OK but there is no sound. So then I tried playing with Windows Media Player, and there is no video but there is sound! 
Finally I tried Windows Movie Maker and I get Video and sound OK. So every program seems to be using different codecs (why WMP and WMM used different codecs both coming from Microsoft!
).
I want to use Adobe Premiere so from your suggestion I need to convert all the mpgs. I tried using Prism, but it also stripped off the sound track, so that is not a solution. I uploaded a heap of video converters a few months back and each one had strengths and weaknesses. So I don’t want to go through that process.
So all I want to know is if you solved this problem and what video converter did you use.

Martin320 3 posts02 Feb 2008I guess another solution would be to find what codec's Windows Movie Maker are using and get Adobe to use those ones. Would be great if I could simply copy the WMM codec over the top of the Adobe ones! Is that another possible solution?
