So I have decided to attempt a "photoreal" model of myself. I have about four hours into it right now, And I figured I would take a shower and chill for a bit. But I kind of wanted to post some progress so I can watch the progression. CC is always welcome.

ok, here we go, I got the head pretty much blocked out, I have a bit of tweaking to do to some areas where the mesh is a bit tight, but I think it is getting closer. At this point I have about 6 hours into it.

Ok, it's that time again. I am almost done tweaking the model and ready to start unwrapping it. This should be interesting as I have never done it before, but I want the model to be good first. If anyone notices any weird topology or funky things with the mesh in general, let me know, It's always possible that I might have overlooked something.

Looks great so far Zach! Keep it up man! I really like the ear, very well made. How did you go about creating the head? Box modeling? Or do u work from tutorials? I plan on making a head one of these days, and would love to know how people start off on them.

On another quick look, your chin looks too sharp in the 3d model compared to the reference images.

Also - any tips for taking the mugshots? Mine never EVER mach up. Pain in arse i tell thee.

Richard 1,943 posts
just take the pics and make them fit on photoshop. use the eyes, nose and mouth for the guidelines.

I did this with box modelling, basically just using the regular toolset that comes with maya. I fleshed out the volume for the head to get a basic shape, and then I proceeded to add details in as I went along. Like I said, I have never modelled a head before, so I am kind of new to the process in general, but after doing one, I have to say that it wasnt that bad. My main problem is just not knowing when I am royally screwing something up.
If you want to follow a good tutorial though, I would say that the Gnomon DVD on modelling the human head was the most helpful to me in doing my research before I got started. As far as taking mugshots goes, the best thing you can do is to stand as far away as you can with the lens zoomed all the way in while framing your subject. The reason for this is that it takes away a ton of lens warp. (test it out, you'll be surprised) And I basically just stood in the corner and had my friend take two pictures of me from those angles. When I brought them into maya, I leveled them out using polygon planes as reference points to match up my eyes, nose, lips and chin. Then I made a polygon cube and the rest was push, pull, extrude, cut, rinse lather repeat.

Nice one - thanks Zach. Does anyone know if there's anyware else selling Gnomon DVD's but a tad bit cheaper? The DVD looks cool, but cant aford to spend that much on it.
Thanks for the tips on the mugshots, when ever i try doing them, my eyes, nose and/or mouth never ever seem to align up, its a pain. I'll play baout with the zoom like you've mentioned. Also - what does 'rinse lather' mean?
Thanks

Ok, It has been a couple of days since I worked on this now, but I stayed up all night doing some freelancing, and I rewarded myself by doing a quick texture and SSS test. I know everything is waaaay off, but I didn't want my update to go slack. More to come...
enjoy!

It looks good, but it looks like a low poly character. I think its mainly the neck segments + the texture res that does it, and the no spec bump and stuff that gives it's special glory

zachm 1,230 posts
hey guys, I forgot to thank you on your comments, so thanks... I have the head unwrapped but further tutillage insists that I proceed in a new and different way in which I shall document and post because to be honest, it makes things waaay easier to do. So i'm going to work on it a bit tomorrow and possibly post another update. If not, then feel free to flood me with hatemail and money beyond my wildest dreams.

Oooh How did I miss this?! Nice one Z. Certainly getting there. But look again at your nostril. The shape of the nose in profile looks great, but the nostril needs more of a curve.

This is pretty cool, would make an awsome low poly chara in them earlier shots, looking impressive with the his res stuff. I think the heads to narrow, but thats probally just me hehe

yeah, my model has changed a bit since the last time I posted, And as far as the width of my head goes, I am fighting visually with just how wide it is... Once I get my hair helmet on there, I think I will be able to gague better, another thing I am thinking of is to shoot a pic of me from the front with my hair wet and slicked back down all sexy like, so I can get a better idea.
And as I promised, a bit of info about my new procedure.
The first thing that I did was create a camera directly in front of my head model and center the model in the frame. I Put my angle of view to 1, and my aspect ratio to 1. Then I set up three other camera's on the back and sides with the same settings and locked them all down so I couldnt screw up or change any settings.
the next step is for me to do a 1k square render of each image. This is about as far as I am right now, due to having to retake reference pictures and process them. But I have started with the front image and begun to pull my reference picture apart and lay it out over the top of my render. That's all I have for now, but hopefully I can post more later on today or this week.

So, here is a small update, I know the texures are totally screwed, this is a test with the SSS shader that comes with maya. I am having a bit of a time wrangling it in, and unfortunately don't have a ton of time to make progress this week, but trust me when I tell you it is better than this render.

aye kaye, I had a bit of time when I was riding on the train this weekend to play around with my textures, and after updating them and playing for a bit with the lighting, I have this to show for it. I know there are still some imperfections, but I want to hear what you guys think. So let er rip!

zachm 1,230 posts
ok peeples. This time i'm closer. I think with some more study I will have it there. The main problems I am still having is that the bump map won't work with the sss_fast_skin shader. That and the weird grainy artifacts you see in the pics. Also, the skin looks a bit waxy, but that's a simple enough shader tweak. But please let me know what you guys think. Dont hold it back!

And this one was just for fun playing with the displacement turned up too high. I thought it made me look like one of the old Warner Brothers cartoon mob bosses. lawls.

at this stage, i feel like a bump map would be better for it than SSS. it feels too smooth.
really nice modelling, though, and mapping.

ok, I finally got the bump map working. Now I can start really tweaking the textures and lighting and then on to the hair.... I am scared of the hair.

time to bump this thread back up, I started futzing with the lighting again on this one after walking away from it for a bit to get a different perspective.
Any suggestions on lighting or anything? I'm planning on getting it over with and making the hair (somehow) soon.

under your chin, there is an area where its all brow, so it eats all the volume away and makes it look flat, and sam with your face, try moving the key light more to the left and move the fill light on the right.
also try giving light tints to your lights (usualy yellow and blue)
you probably know all this but i just wanted to let me know my thatghts.
edit: i forgot to say, REALY NICE PROGRESS

Hey Zach - it's looking pretty good! I like the shader a lot. My olny commet would be with the eyelids/eyebrows, they look a bit squashed, but maybe it's because there's no actaul euebrow there.
Otherwise, it's shaping up nicely man, and does indeed look like you - judging by the mug-shots.

I don't want you guys to think i'm all talk and no rock here. So here's an update that's not really ready to be shown, because it has a whole dumptruck full of problems still, but I have to post, because the show must go on. Here's an update with a hair test. (crowd goes wild)

Nice one man! You've really managed to pull this one together. I really like the hair and the brows - even though, i think the brows might need to have a bit more depth to them? As in make them come out a bit more? At the mo, it looks like it's flat woth your face.
But nice one man, excellent job!

ok, Well, I come to you folks tonight with my head hung low. (pun abundant) I have put my best effort into this thing, and so far, it has turned out acceptable until now. I am having a ton of problems getting the hair looking right. Or working really in general. I don't know if I should walk away from this thing for a while and work on another part of it or what. I am obviously dissapointed with the turnout of this hair, because it took a few days to render on my machine at home, and we don't have the plugin at work. Soooooo, I am going to sulk and work on something else for a while until I come up with a solution for this problem. But heres an update.

crap, i can't watch it here at work...
walk away for a little if you have to, but you've put so much into this so far, and it looks GREAT so far, and I'd hate to see you totally abandon it! maybe try some other, easier hair things first.
i have yet to see you in a challenge. *wags finger* and you were supposed to be working on the same thing as Richard for the earth one! how about some water? how about dishin' out some maya fluids for a while, then going back to hair?
but, like i said, i'd hate to see you just stop on this when it's come so far.

That would be a great one, I learned a ton about modeling just from looking in the mirror a ton and touching and feeling my face. This model is still a bit off, but at this point, I have moved on to other things. But yeah, I believe that modeling something you can feel and see right in front of you, (you!) is one of the best ways to start "seeing things correctly" Great idea guys!

if we all made models of ourselves and posted them for everyone to download, we could have quite a bit of fun with them! y'know, instead of our little games with the pics, we'd have full 3d models!
looks great, zach! the eyebrows didn't stand out to me for some reason until cam mentioned them, and i agree that you could use a trim, or at least a brush!

greak work though!
