Hey peeps,
My goal this weekend is to model, texture, rig, animate, light and render an animation involving a slimy/nasty creature.
I may end up gearing the animation towards the "air" visual effects challenge, but I don't want to force that theme on the animation if it doesn't end up fitting.....so that's why I'm posting my progress in this forum because I'm not sure it'll end up being an entry.
Anywho......here's my modelling progress so far in Max. I do plan to finish off the modelling/texturing in ZBrush as well.

Update! Texturing = done, methinks.
I didn't like the little iris's, so I took them out
Just gotta rig him up now and then I can animate

.....still trying to get the animation done by tomorrow night if all goes well

there's some weird little red line though, by the bottom of his far eye. what's that?
if i could plug this as a WIP, i would.

That weird bright red line is somethign I'm trying to fix. Basically, his eyes are reflective.....but for some reason when a raytrace material reflects a mental ray fast sss material, all the colors go super saturated in the reflection (ie....that weird artifact you're seeing). Might just do a raytracing exclude or something.....)

I should note that I've decided to use this character for a short film I'll be making over the next couple of weeks. So I won't have any animation done by today.....but I'll keep you all updated on the progress of this project

Okay......well the short film I'll be making will be involving lights.......insects.......and of course our favourite main character (the creature posted on page 1 of this thread).
Here's a light fixture I made today.......
(By the way.......I haven't used any GI on any of the renders I've posted. My goal is to light everything traditionally using only regular lights and shadows

How'd you get that effect on the bulbs? is it some form of translucency? sss? fog e.t.c?

Nope....no translucency on the bulbs......just a regular max self-luminous raytrace material with a gradient ramp for the level of self-luminosity

wow man, ha ha, i'm not sure how o feel about that light fixture...
blown away, or hate-filled. lol.
after having worked in a factory for two summers that builds fluorecent light fixtures i can tell you that that is incredible, absolutely realistic, i also hate it at the same time because i make those things all-day long in hell. lol.

Finished off my night by modelling a fly.
Obviously no textures yet.......and the current hair system I used is temporary.....but here's what it's looking like
Also keep in mind that it won't really be used in any real extreme closeups....so I'm not too too worried about minute details.

i'm not sure how you do this so quickly mate, i find myself modelling for 5 mins then getting torn away to render and tweak for the next 6 hours.

Heheh well that's something that's hard to get over.....but once you get into more production-geared work, you'll find it's a million times easier to model first, texture second and then render third (without breaking that order).
