Hey - I thought I'd give my project a rest for a few days, (Im working on a short film that's taking up all my time at the mo) and thought i'd give animating a shot. Here's a very rough head movement for 'Harry' - please note that it's still very rough, and it's the only thing ive touched so far - i just thought i'd keep a WIP to see how things progress.
The sounds from one of my fave films of all time - Dumb and Dumber.
Thanks

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! haha...I had that sound clip filed away as a perfect sound clip to do on a rainy day since I'd never seen an animation done with it before.....
Ah well.......nice work so far, although I'd recommend saving lip sync until ALL of the body motion is done

....but either way keep us up to date with your progress!

Thanks for the comments so far guys. I've added a bit of shoulder movement and corrected a few head issues - still need to perfect the lip synch on some of the words. Any comments so far on the shoulders?
He he - nice one T - still, by all means u can carry on using the clip, i know for a fact that it'll put my little anim. to shame

Yeah for some reason - i find it a lot more easy to do the lip synch first, and work from there - then i know how/what the character is suppose to do. Dont know - does anyone else work like this? Is it a bad habbit?
Thanks

Ahhh, back to buisness, here's what i got so far;
Do you guys think his right arm swings out too much? Any Crits and comments would be great.
Thanks

Hey Iest.
I'm not sure that the arm swings out too much, just that at the moment the movement doesn't look very natural or fluid. It kinda looks like two separate actions. I'm guessing that you have the arm in FK at the mo - If so, be careful since you need to have the hand planted on the table. Any upper body motion will affect the hand position if it is in FK...
...which brings me to the next crit rather nicely. Put in some upper body motion!

Right now he's looking a little stiff. Any action of the arm or head will make the upper body move (even if it's just a little bit) I generally work from the hips and body outwards - Sometimes it is diffcult to visualise when animating, but by the time you start animating you should have the actions and gestures planned out - so you can start animating from your hips and work your way out from the chest to the arms and the head.
Oh and one more quick tip since we were talking about arcs in another thread. The head also arcs. Take the point of the nose as your reference a look at the line of action from there, plot the arc. You'll see that it's quite linear right now. Now I'm not saying that every action and movement needs an arc, just generally... and that the head also follows that rule

Hey Iest, it does depend on the action in hand - sometimes I'll put a dot every two frames (but keep an eye on the frames in between of course) though if it's a quick motion, yeah - every frame. Oh and as I think you saw in the other thread, Maya does have some handy tools in the animate menu.

one thing i advice on the frame thing some times i end up with alot of betweens so a good way also to try work some small motion problems in the graphs assuming maya has graphs never used it before but its autodesk so i guess it does
WAITING FOR UR NEXT UPDATE COME ON COME ON

Just had a quick go at trying to resolve a few things (I went over the the admin office as I left work earlier and grabbed me some Dry Wipe Markers, and boy are they good!! - Thanks for the tip!)
I still havent touched the upper body as yet, and im pretty tierd right now, so im gonna go to bed in a minute. Do you guys feel the arm swings better now? Or is it still not right? I've also had a quick play on the arc or the head going down - i think it flows much better now.
Yeah i use the Graph editor every single time, would be screwed without it!
Nice one - please give any feedback, that would be great.

Hey man,
You might want to look at the arms since right now they're kinda floaty. As opposed to travelling succinctly into position, the one on the left does a bit of a swoop that looks odd.
Also, the head kinda bobs around and goes up and down too much.....if you try and re-enact what he's doing right now, you'd probably get a bit dizzy! (I did).............just keep in mind your acting choices and how they reflect movement in real life. Certainly there are many principles in cartoon physics that break natural laws of physics, but the theory behind them should stay the same (things in motion stay in motion, gravity etc etc)
Keep showing your progress!

Hey T - nice one man, thanks for your input. Yeah i definalty agree with the arms bit, i could not pin point what was wrong with them, now i understand what im doing wrong, thanks man.
For this, i used a bit of reference form the actual scene from Dumb and Dumber (just the head mainly) - if you watch Jeff Daniels say this line, his head goes flying around, and I though that it would be cool to convey that into my anim too, since it kinda shows that hes a bit nervous/twitchy (spelling)/afraid of the 'bully' whos asking him 'are you gonna eat that?' - do you think that I should cut the head movement, and ease it out a bit?
Thanks again - any more for any more guys?

Ok, here's an update. I've totaly changed the way the arms approach the end of the table (i still need to smooth it out a bit), and i've also played around with the head. Ive also added a drink there for him, just thought it makes more sense for him to be holdong something just before he takes his ars back. Any C&C?
Thanks

Iv'e managed to hit something in the Graph Editors that everytime i re-open the scene all my tangets are flatten and it buggers up th animation big time, does anyone know what i've done, and how can i undo this?

Heya - ok I've played around a bit more with it - it's just to get the timing right and stuff, so the arms goes through the table and doesnt keep still ect, I seriously have loads of work to do o it, and please ignore the burger - he will start to eat it eventually.
What do you guys think of this version as compared to the erlier one? Does it flow better?
Thanks

Had no probs with the download Iest. Looks a lot better than the earlier WIP's. coud still use a little motion in the upper body as it's very riggid. Also be carefull of the CG 'watery' effect. This is what hppens when you go in the opposite direction of being too rigid - where the object kinda floats about for little or no reason. I see you've cut out some head turns, which works better... but there is a little too much waving around for my liking. I think quick, subtle shifts would be more suitable for the 'nervous' feeling of the guy.
Keep it up though bud... getting beter all the time

works for me, looks great! again, i don't have the experience to really analyze this, but the burger falling looked like its a WIP, right?
great work though, better than i could do!

Heya - thanks guys, yeah the burger is still WIP.
I have no idea why it doesn't load for some, and does for others - anyone know?
Thanks for the heads up G, ill try and cut out some more head movements tonight, and get to work on that upper body. I need to ease in and out the pushing away bit i think, get it flowing nicer.
Thanks

Heya Globes - that's alright man, no problem. Thanks for the explanation, I havent had a chance yet to play around with the switch, but i definatly will - it sounds like the answer ive been looking for - for quite a while. Thanks man.
Here's another update;
getting there me thinks - still need to play about with the arm that swings away from the burger - ill do that now before i head out to the party (yeah!! woo-hoo!! a partay!!)
I should also mention the ive started to take down some past updates because i though i'd best keep the number of files on the server down.
Thanks again
