I bought a 2D art book, so I just started going through the lessons, and this was the first normal exercise. This took me about 30 minutes or so, so I guess I'll get faster later.
Later lessons are about anatomy, perspective, rule of thirds (compositing, etc.), shading, and different mediums for art.
PS: I can't find my power cable/brick for my scanner, so that's why I just used my camera this time.
Edit: Last night I typed the title as, It's a bird, it's a plane, no, it's a SHOE!
However, I think something much have mest up, I dunno, cause this morning it's just said "It" for the title.

22 Jan 2007thats rather nice actualy for a first start... although, they would kill me at uny if i would do such a drawing, because it is very "linear" by that i mean that it is done with the contours only. later on it the book, i suppose they would teach you the shading, but try it asap, it is very important, it makes things look a lot more realistic because it gives it the volume.
linear drawing is good if you do it with chinese ink, i would advise you work with choarcols, or with "pierre noire" and try drawing on bigger formats, even though that looks like an a4, try drawing on A3 MINIMUM.
if you need any tips or help, let me know, cause i am in an art uny so i could give you as many tips to improve if ou want, giving you practical examples...
keep it up, drawing is a complicated thing to do, but what you have to remember at all times is that you have to draw in 3d even though it is in 2 dimetions.
one last thing, try straitening your lines instead of doing thousand of very tiny ones. for a month, i took an A3 pad and did straight lines every evening. i used to do 4 pages a day. -
Jonathan 480 posts22 Jan 2007Yeah, I was just trying to stay in the lines of the project, though I have read through a good bit of it about other more applicable stuff.
Sure, more advice would be excellent.
I'll post some more stuff as I progress through the book.
I really want to get started on drawing basic shapes and then doing the correct shading, that'll be in the next couple of lessons I think.

Last art class I had was in 7th grade (circa '97), so I haven't had much training in art.
Here's another thing I drew yesterday while going through the lessons,
The idea was just take a few minutes and draw random things around you, so I drew a phone, a compass, my Xbox360 Universal controller, the little lead container (tube), the maluable eraser stuff, a USB drive, etc.

Claymation 600 posts22 Jan 2007That's a nice start! One thing I notice is the perspective might be a little off. The back of the shoe looks to be more straight on, while the front looks more of a three quarters perspective angle.
And I definitely agree about the shading, that would help a ton. -
Jonathan 480 posts22 Jan 2007Yeah, I noticed that when I was about done, the bottom looked flat and the top was angled. The lesson said not to get too upset about perspective (yet), so I felt better, lol.

Claymation 600 posts22 Jan 2007hehe, also, if it makes you feel any better, my 2 year old son really liked it. He pointed to it and yelled "Shoe!" as soon as he saw it!

Jonathan 480 posts24 Jan 2007My mom had some tests to do at the hospital today, so I drove her there. While in the waiting room, I worked on a horse (in the book there is a section on drawing animals, and he had sketched out this horse, after blocking out the general shapes), so I used his drawing as a reference for shading, blocking, etc.
I just drew it in about 15 minutes, as I'm just trying to learn the basics. Next thing I'm going to do is go through a long tutorial about sketching the male head. -
