ooo nice start so clean and smooth.
only thing i see that bugs me a little is the back inside of the feet there is a small indent it throws me off a bit cause everything else is smooth and flows then but could be intentional.
cant wait to see more

Excellent work Rich! I really like the character design! Your team mate did and excellent job there!
One crit about the model is that for an old man, i think his back is too straight, have him stooped down a bit, maybe a tad bit hunchbacked? And maybe his old man boobs are too prominent? But other than that, the model looks super clean, and great!
-
Richard 1,943 posts
thx, as for the back, he is only in this pose for modeling and to make the rigging easyer, he will be bend after i riged him, but nice spotted
prominent? what's that?
basicaly there is the sippers cause we'll never need him bare footed so he just ahs his slippers on
don't worry i will wear clothes
thx for the crits and the cheer up:P

Hey - me grumpy? I think you've got me mixed up with someone else there Rich!
Yeah i like his slippers - i was referring to his boobs - tits - M?sanges - Mamelons i believe it's called in French? I think they come out to quickly - what do you think?
Cool - I see what you mean about the back - it'll be loads easier to have him in that hunchbacked pose after rigging, good call!
-
Richard 1,943 posts
ah yea, but here is an other tric, when he is going to have a shit on, with the trancluenty of the sirt cause auf the set, you'll get nice shirt creases and you'll get nice shadows around the boobs.
haha your french is funny mamelon is indeed boobs,
but these are animal boobs like the one pig have:P
i ask what the word ment because i really don't know wha it means, please tell me !
edit: somhow shit pops up instead of s-h-i-r-t
-
iest_rob 1,671 posts
Ahh cool - good call. Yeah it will definatly add a good shadow there using this method.
Ha ha - I was close! it means Nipples then?
Prominent means something that stands out - kinda obvious that it's there you know? But yeah, makes sense why its so big now.

Was the junk really necessary? lol
I really like the model, like rob said though, the chestal area region is a bit too prodominant. That's also a ridiculously clean mesh...
-
Richard 1,943 posts
"ridiculously clean mesh" is that bad?

ps:crits are welcome btw!

nice man! I really dig it, it kinda has a hand-drawn texture kinda feel! there's a little white halo edge on the mountains, though, and thats kinda distracting.
-
ivanisavich 4,196 posts
Oh wow that looks so neat!
If you were to up the resolution of the ground texture, and add a little bit of ambient occlusion on the ground near the base of the house it would look perfect!
-
Richard 1,943 posts
good call hype, i though it got rid of it but i paparently didn't enought... and btw, these are hand painted textures, on paper that is.
t, i think the low rez ground is because of the angle we are at, and as for the ambiant oclusion, i'll look into that... and try my best on it.
aslo, here is a pose test with the grandpa with his tool and binoculars... (the textures will be made tomorow for him)
and thx for these ver quick crits, it'll allow me to do modifications tonight...
-
Richard 1,943 posts
here, is that better? ass for the occlusion, i tried to improve it (faked it) cause i really don't want to use an oclusion pass, i would rather leave it to scanline and not move int mental ray...
the other thing is that we have to hand the 2 minutes long clip. for that reason, i can't have too much time loss on renders, so far it's 15 seconds per image tops... but the main character is not there yet.

you should teach the 2d guy to animate

all he does is concept and u two get left withmodellnig rigging and animating. hehe it looks great richard as usual, the gramps has a ton of personality to him, cant wait to see it finished
-
ivanisavich 4,196 posts
Nah the ground around the house is still looking very video-game-ish (ie...improper shading). I imagine it should be more like the image I've attached.
The quickest way to achieve that look would just be to paint the shadowy areas into the texture.
-
Richard 1,943 posts
i think i'll actualy do that yea, copy the floor and paint a quick texture in photoshop... well, you get me...
and ridestowe, thx mate! and as for the team, we actualy chose what we roughtly wanted to do when we started working on it. and even though we eatch work in specific areas, we still do a bit of everything, he did some modellingtoo, but he spent more time on the textures.. i did a little texturing too etc... you get the idea.
-
Richard 1,943 posts
here is a new render... i added a little occlusion after all.. is it better by any chance?
i am starting to work on the night ligting...
-
Richard 1,943 posts
so, here is what i have so far... i supose it will need a lot more work, bt for that i need your help guys..., anyhow, here it is.
-
Denny 179 posts
try throwing a porch light on, it would help with the night lighting. Also, the night still seems too light, try giving the light a dark blue/navy color and see how that works out.
-
ivanisavich 4,196 posts
Some nice glowly lights in the windows might help too, but only if your main character isn't supposed to be asleep
-
Global 1,589 posts
Looking good man, some house lights would really liven up the night scene... maybe a little lantern on the porch
-
Global 1,589 posts
LOL - three people posting at the same time with the same idea...
-
bzudo 151 posts
maybe some stars and a moon if the character is suppose to be sleeping. otherwise, lights or candles or something. maybe a well too. in the negative space to the left of the house. just and idea.
-
Richard 1,943 posts
basicaly, this part of the anim, will be switching from day to night and vice vera a few time... during the shot, the grandpa will be working around the house, so there is no need for inner lights...(well i don't think so)
it will be a sort af timelaps, to show how hard he will be working during them 3 days..
the moon and the sun will alternativly go up and down, switching from day to night....
i can't seem to get the right colours for the lights...
i just thought of adding a little glowing light on the outside, you guys convinced me... it should be up soon...
oh, and thx for your help guys... i kind of rely on you for crits, i tend to forget a lot of things caause i am getting tired, harldy slept lately cause of that stupid deadline... i probably said it allready, we have to hand that in on wednesday and we have no animation yet... we're doomed
-
zachm 1,230 posts
I think that something a bit more interesting than just glowing lights is some sort of light on in one area of the house, and then it shuts off and another one turns on as he moves around. And to add to that, have his silhouette pass by the window a couple times carrying objects or something like that. Then it's a step up from the old "glowing window" look. Make it interesting dude..

oh no, pardon me Zach, i didn't explain enought, what i meant by working is that, you will have a big cloud of smoke all over the house and see hands here and there hammering and doing random stuff, (very cartonny style) if you know what i mean...
here is a new render for the night sot (i should also mention that the night shots will be 2% of the anim, all the rest will be in daytime...)
-
hype 2,964 posts
wow, this came a long way super fast! looking good! I dig that last shot, nice dramatic lighting.

thx you guys for all your positive feedback, it keeps me going.
talking about goimg, i am animating a run cycle for the house, it sould be finished tonight...
here is what i have so far, still rather ruff, but not too far from copletion... i still have to take care of the right leg and watch for that point of gravity...
*that's unfair, you're the one showing me the ketchup bottle now!

during the daytime scenes i think the shadows need to be a bit darker. other than that it has a great sense of style and continuity to it and i really want to see it when its finished!

Hey mate...so far it's looking pretty cool!
Couple of things to note:
1) I like how he flicks the screwdrivers...but right now they should be flying out of his hands

....in order to properly do a move like that your hand would have to be more parrallel to your body, and facing slightly upwards
2) Some of his motions are really slow....try adding a bit of snapiness or something to give him some life (I realize it's a blocking pass though)
3) Everything else is shaping up fine!

Just say: "Hey man, I know your animation is perfect, but it could be even MORE perfect by turning his hands back like 5-10 degrees so they aren't magically sticking to his palms."
And I think what T means about the slow movements is the old guy seems to float around quite a bit. Instead of the constant linear speed of him moving, if you break it up and add some more easing in and out from each pose it makes it feel much more natural. The movement overall is great though, if that's one of your first passes then you are in great shape.
