I switched it into spline only because after offsetting some controls for overlap it started to look real funky in stepped. Haven't touched the curves though, just a quick switch.
I've got approximately 6,459 things to do still, but I'm away for the weekend so this is my official "blocking +" pass. -
25 Aug 2007It looks cool so far, man. In my humble opinion, I think it would add a ton if he did more of a look around and spin type of thing at the end, instead of just a turn to the side, Or instead of that, he could really bunch up his upper body, like if he was holding a hat to his chest, like he was exploding with joy. Either way, I think you've got a good start here man.

Just did the two blinks in the beginning and that's it.
Zach I'm having trouble picturing what you mean about a look around and spin type thing. Can you try to explain that again? I agree the end is kind of bleh so I'm totally open to ideas, just don't quite get what you mean. -
26 Aug 2007well, as i'm watching it, i'm thinking that iit might be cool to have him approaching the camera while he's talking, and maybe the camera is backing away a bit, like he's addressing the camera specifically. And at the part where he's talking about welcome aboard, he's kind of turning his body in a fluid motion with his approach, so that he's casually strolling towards the viewer and gesturing the vessel at the same time. The spinning around thing isn't so much a spin, as just a playful rotation of his body a full 360 in y, to add a bit more eccentricity to his character. A kind of adoring look around the ship he's introducing the viewer to. Is that making any more sense?

26 Aug 2007Small update, worked on it for a couple hours tonight and tweaked some stuff. Added another blink, played with the eyes a bit more and changed a few poses around.
I might try something similar to your idea Zach, I like it. And yeah now it makes perfect sense, thanks.

Update! I haven't done anything with the arms or eyes so yet, just been working on a new weight shift and step. Any weight/balance/pose critiques you have would be awesome. -

Some current comments from me are:
-work on smoothing out them moving holds...right now his hips move very unsmoothly
-would be nice to see some more overlap in the spine
-same with the head...more overlap needed between in neck/head
-would be nice to see him with more "piratey" expressions....right now he looks like a keen businessman with a sword....when I imagine a pirate I imagine someone with a perpetually furrowed brow, hunched over, one eye open more than the other, and a crafty smile....you know, something like this:

03 Sep 2007Yeah they haven't given us face controls yet, we're only allowed to use eyelids and puppet mouth so that we focus on the body first.
I guess I should have mentioned that before!
Once we finish this shot we carry it into the next class where we get full face.
I'll definitely look into the hips and the overlap, thanks brotha. -

Things that popped out for me on the first view:
-at "natural rules" his hand (on the left) moves quite stiffly
-at "welcome aboard the black pearl" it would be nice to see some more overlap in the hips/spine/head
-at "turner", when he's stretching out his hand....the fingers keep moving until the end but your moving hold on the actual hand is quite stiff....would be nice to keep it moving downward a bit until the end of the shot -
